The hug shared around the world by: Harrison Epstein

http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/29/living/ferguson-protest-hug/index.html?hpt=us_t4

In Portland, Oregon a young African American boy was holding up a sign that said "Free Hugs", a very sweet gesture made in hopes of calming down some of the violence related to the Ferguson case with in his city. The boy was greeted with many hugs and a lot of people were very glad to see someone promoting peace, but the most touching part was that a photo was taken of the young boy being hugged by a police officer that was sent to quiet down the rioters in Portland.

This image actually  has gone viral very quickly and is being used to promote peace in Ferguson at this time. People interviewed after having seen this touching scene were even quoted as having said "I thought, what a great scene. A powerful scene. A scene with a message that needed to be communicated. A scene of coming together,"

This was an absolutely touching story and I legitimately cried a bit, after writing so many current events about these awful things that have been happening it is really nice to be able to see some good in people after all this madness about Ferguson. Every time I look at that kid i tear up a little because that really is the face of hope and I know that sounds super cheesy but its true! Just look at Rosa Parks, all it takes is one person to stand up and say "this is not right and I am going to do something about it" to change the course of history for everyone. Thank you little boy.

  1. This is the message that everyone needs to hear. Depending on what news stations people tune in to, some only hear about the riots and let that taint the whole image of these protests gray with violence, exaggeration, and "unnecessary" back-lashes towards the police. I hope that this picture gets spread exponentially because the world needs to see what this whole thing is really about.

  2. That's definitely true - that it does take just one person. For me hearing about this was really inspirational in that he took up that one sign and did what he did. I'm going to agree with Yasmine on this in that it is something that everyone needs to hear, because it's a light in the dark and may start the end to all of this rioting and violence.

  3. If this young boy is able to communicate a message of peace in this time of chaos, I think we can all contribute a little and help spread the calm. It is heart warming to know that some people care

  4. This is very well written! I agree, I teared up a bit just seeing the picture! It just gives so much hope, and the fact that it was a little boy standing up for peace is just incredible. He was raised well. I'm just glad that officer has a heart!

  5. I'm so happy to see that there are some police officers that have a heart. I know that sounds harsh but police around me have made irrational choices. One time I was picking up a friend who lives in HP, and I was followed by a police officer because of the way my car looked. It is a 20 year old, red convertable, unlike almost all cars in HP. That's just one case, and it's a good reminder that police officers and people can live in peace and love. I really hope more pictures like this is seen.

  6. This just makes me so happy Harrison! That kind of dedication and care, first from the boy giving out his hugs, and secondly from the police officer who makes an appropriate response to the little boy's efforts is just so touching and wonderful. It makes one think that there is still hope and some kind of caring in the world today, even with all of the violence and controversy surrounding us...
