After two Native American boys save their money and drive seven hours to tour their dream school, a woman calls the cops on them for making them nervous with their dark clothing, late arrival to the tour, hands in their pockets, and shyness. The woman told 911 that the boys were Hispanic and from Mexico. It turns out, the two boys were Native American and from New Mexico. By the time they were allowed to rejoin their group, the tour had ended. The president of Colorado State University has apologized for the incident, tried to get in contact with the family, and offered to refund their travel expenses.
As mentioned in the article, the young men were walking on their ancestors land and were racially profiled. Before the land was taken by Anglos, it belonged to Native Americans. Their ancestors were forced to adopt to American traditions and were separated from the land that was sacred to them. Now, Native Americans and many other people of color (all of which worked hard to make America what it is) are being targeted because of their race. It breaks my heart that their dreams of attending CSU have probably been tainted and they wasted seven hours of driving, only to be checked by the police. While the woman who made the call probably felt safer after actions were taken, the two innocent boys were most likely feeling scared of what’s to happen next.

I feel for these kids because I'm Native American and since discovering that I have gotten a lot of hate and jokes made about my ancestors. Being racially discriminated aginst dosent just have to do with black people it has to do with ithers as well.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad not only to see such racism but also the speed with which the woman took such drastic action. Perhaps 911 would be more able to respond to real emergencies if it wasn't inundated with such trivial and biased concerns.
