At an off-campus party, a Michigan college student was daubed in the face with peanut butter during a hazing ritual. He happened to have a deadly peanut allergy and suffered a very dangerous reaction. He passed out, and his eyes, nose, and mouth were extremely swollen. He could have easily been killed, and police are investigating this event as a criminal matter. The boy has since transferred to another school.
From someone who has a severe peanut allergy as well, this is very scary. The article was posted March 3rd, so the news is recent. Before reading it, I knew that hazing was popular, especially in college, and I'm well aware of what severe allergy reactions are like. I think the article was written to bring this issue to light and to show how easy it is for a seemingly harmless act to turn into something very dangerous. It is very significant because it reminds people to really think before they act and to not mess around with food items such as peanut butter when many are allergic. Hazing can be related to the concept of public shaming with the New England Puritans in colonial times. When someone did something wrong, they would be put in the stocks or even branded.

This is definitely a scary situation, I like you synthesis, it really works to connect your article to history
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible, and people should be careful with their actions.
ReplyDeleteI know hazing is a common and usually fun thing, but people really need to be careful.
