"Hold Up" because Beyonce just dropped the album of the year,
Lemonade. The album that for the past week has been called a 'masterpiece' has been brewing emotions in the community, getting everyone in formation. Many critics call the work "a personal diary turned feminist anthem album" whereas Beyonce simply calls it "life". The album is said to be a narrative about her relationship/lack there of one, with her current husband, music-producer Jay-Z. The album makes nods towards female empowerment and not being reduced to a standard by men, and not being misguided by men, however the album also makes huge notions to current events, such as the up scaling numbers of police brutality being referenced in the video "Formation". Her nods to racial and gender equality as well as female empowerment (ALL WHILE MAKING GOOD MUSIC) has set the public scene ablaze as one might not get through a single conversation without spewing the word "lemonade".
The nods Queen B makes in her latest album, especially toward race and feminism, relate heavily to the Civil Rights movement of the 60s, as well as the Women's Rights movements in the 70s. In her album, she references historical figures such as Rosa Parks, MLK, but most prominently Malcolm X as his speeches, and visuals appear in many snippets across the visual film Beyonce released attached to the album. As for nods towards feminism, Beyonce describes more lyrically about how she will not take backseat to people in general as she declares woman are strong, much like how women in the 70s fought for civil liberties such as the right to abortion without male consent.
All in all, Beyonce made a statement piece, and did one hell of a job.
