A recent study has shown the drastic weight changes experienced by previous contestants on the show The Biggest Loser. While contestants initially left the show in the best shape of their life, a majority experienced difficulty maintaining their new weight. Studies showed that many contestants showed a drop in lepton, a chemical in our body that controls hunger. Many also experienced a drop in their metabolism, burning hundreds of calories fewer than the average person of their same weight.
I think it is extremely difficult to maintain a lifestyle of healthy eating and consistent fitness, which could be a factor in the contestants difficulty in maintaining their new weights. The show and reality are extremely different environments, however the research showing a majority regaining weight, even becoming heavier than before competition, and having a slower metabolism is somewhat surprising. The article talked about our bodies wanting to return to the initial weight we started with, before the diet and exercise. People are starting to research potentially being able to raise levels of lepton in individuals to try and control hunger. This is similar to the various vaccines and medicines created throughout US history, not only to cure diseases and viruses but also to control various conditions.

I saw an article about this as well and found it disturbing, it makes the show look even more misleading than it already is. The better way to a healthy lifestyle is gradual change and going at your own pace instead of a sudden change in diet and exercise. Doing something that strains your body suddenly and for an extended amount of time can be hurtful more than helpful. I'm not surprised by this article, just disturbed (not sure if that's the right word to convey what I'm feeling).
