Mentally disabled prisoner starves to death by Shara Jeyarajah p.8

A mentally ill man was imprisoned of stolen $5.05 worth of goods. He has been diagnosed with delusional behavior and psychotic disorder by several doctors. Over the course of four months, he was given very little resulting in his death. His aunt died the prison and is forming a federal lawsuit. He was often denied food, his water was cut off, and his cell was covered in feces. He lost 40 pounds, which doctors deemed could not be gained back by nutrition. His aunt was traumatized byhis transformation. Inmates begged for inmates to help him, but their requests were denied. His family mourned his death, angry at the cruelty of it all. The man, Mitchell, was diagnosed with many mental issues at a young age, resulting in a final diagnosis of "extremely psychotic". Mitchell, despite his problems, was loved by his family and had a keen sense of music as well as a great sense of humor.
This synthesizes to mental treatment before Dorthea Dix, where mental patients were locked up and treated as cruelly as mitchell.

  2. What they did to the guy was awful. Just because he was a sick patient doesn't mean he shouldn't be feed and put in a disgusting cell.

  3. This is absolutely awful to hear about, especially considering the kind of poverty we Americans fight against today. Sometimes we just refuse to look back and see all the ugly that's going on with OUR nation. I sincerely hope that his family is able to gain back welfare money for his death, though I'm certain the suffering pain they must endure will continue, unfortunately.
