5 years of slavery and starvation -Nicole Chatham 6th period

This week I read an article that discussed a woman named Zunduri and her time spent as a slave. When Zunduri was 17, she ran away with her boyfriend but quickly found herself homeless in Mexico City. In search of a job, Zunduri found food and shelter with a woman who owned a dry cleaning shop in the Mexican capital's south side. While the owner and her family treated Zunduri nicely at first, it all soon changed with increasing work requirements and decreasing amounts of food. As time progressed on, Zunduri's conditions worsened significantly. The owner and family became physically and verbally abusive with cruel torture tactics and even placed Zunduri in chains. Fortunately Zunduri was able to make an escape when the shop owner had left her chains a little loose! Zunduri is now celebrating her first year of freedom!

Analysis- This article is crazy! It is so horrible that there are so many awful things like this happening to people around the world. I'm so extremely thankful that she was able to escape and can now move forward with her life and heal from her injuries and poor health. I can relate this article back in U.S. history to slavery in the thirteen colonies all the way up to the Civil Rights Movement. Throughout the history of United States slavery is seen to have been very prominent especially on plantations and in the South. Like this article, slavery in the U.S. has drastically effected the lives of those enslaved and clearly created a need to end it. With the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, and later the Civil Rights Movement, people were now stepping up to combat slavery and fight for their rights!

  1. I hate the fact that slavery exsists still today after all of the sacrifices that were made to end it.
