Gender disputes- Eleni Loving p.1
There's lots of controversy right now about rights for transgendered
people. This article discusses the fact that New Jersey has included
gender identity transgender people in its laws against discrimination
for almost 10 years. These anti-discrimination laws protect people from
employment and housing discrimination. The article discusses that
sometimes it is really difficult to prove whether someone is
discriminating against another person in these issues. It also explains
that transgender people sometimes hesitate to try to sue for
discrimination protections, because they don't want to call extra
attention to themselves. This leaves transgender people at a higher risk
of unemployment and homelessness than many other groups. The article
talks about a New Jersey attorney and transgender woman who works to
support the rights of transgendered people and others in the LGBT
community. Another transgender woman in the article describes being
harassed by police, but then deciding to bring a lawsuit to help
conditions be better for others in the future. They all agree that the
New Jersey laws are not perfect Solutions, but that they help support
people's rights and help encourage transgender people fight for their
civil rights.
