Couple Fight for Custody of Twins After Home Birth- Jazmin Garcia (2nd Period)

Erica May Carey and her husband Cleave Rengo were blessed with twins in their lovely Washington home. Instead of going to the hospital to give birth, they stayed home and delivered there. Later, their newborn twins and their 10 month old baby were taken away from them once the twins were born because Carey refused to allow them to be taken to the hospital for examination when the paramedics arrived to their home. As USA Today reported, the couple cited their Christian beliefs for the use of holistic medicine for themselves and their children. Governor Jay Inslee justified for the CPS and explained how every child's safety is their priority. Rengo children's safety are at risk. The couple petitioned the state to return their children who they've barely seen in 8 weeks. Their oldest son, Levi, celebrated his 1 year birthday without his family and came down with a case of pneumonia with an ear infection in both ears. One of the twins, Daniel, had issues with reflux. The petition was turned down because the Rengo children aren't being abused or neglected.

This relates to APUSH because religion has always been an obstacle to a lot of people. Their views make sense and I agree with them, but I also believe that the children should be checked in to a hospital to make sure they're healthy and well. As for the state, I think it's wrong for them to take away their children for 8 weeks. Some people do things different and we should learn to respect that.

  1. This is so sad! While I feel bad for the couple missing their children, I also feel bad for the children that they aren't able to recieve medical attention even though they are sick. Hopefully this will all be sorted out and the couple will get their children back!

  2. That's awful! I mean I get that they wanted to make sure that the kids were safe and healthy, but you shouldn't keep them away from their family for that long, especially if they weren't being harmed.

  3. This is a touchy subject. But I do completely respect their choices to do a birth at home. I do think that they should have checked up with doctors to make sure all was well, and if they needed anything, they could get medical help. I do think it's not safe to not bring them to the hospital at all, but taking the children completely away is a little much. Either way, I think medical checks should have been done, no matter where the children were birthed, and yes, religion has been an obsticle since as long as history can show

  4. Although i believe that their religious views should be respected i think that the well being of the children should have been taken into consideration. Any number of things could have been wrong with them and they could have ended up being very sick.
