In California, new water reservoirs have not been built since the 1970s. This is a problem as the population has all but doubled since then and only continues to increase. Due to the lack of water, California has fallen into a sort of drought for the past three years. They plan to build multiple new reservoirs, but unfortunately that takes time along with lots of money. Dams are out of the question for California due to the preservation of healthy, safe fish. After a couple of meetings with executive leaders though, it look likes California will get the water it needs.
This relates to the dust bowl during the Great Depression. In the 1930s, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas were hard hit by this agriculturally elicited drought, but the west was in charge of the affects. Many families migrated into California in the 1930s to find better stability. Today, I think stability can come to California by building more water reservoirs, so they don't have to live in a drought. Luckily, it looks like that could happen in the near future.
