World Leaders Scale Back Rhetoric on Donald Trump By: Elise Labott ((Zoë Roberts, 3rd))

Summary: World leaders, along with all of us in America, are now having to come to terms with the fact that Donald Trump has a chance at becoming the next president of the U.S..  British Prime Minister David Cameron, a once avid Trump critic, spoke at a conference in Japan and stated that Trump deserves respect for making it thus far in the Republican Primaries. Trump had previously called out Cameron, asking him to make an apology for calling his policies on muslims, "Stupid and wrong".  Trump recently spoke for the first time about his foreign policy, taking a very isolationistic standpoint that goes backwards on most of U.S. and NATO relations that have been years in the making.

Analysis: Trump's idea of the "Great" America is mostly based around the presidency's of FDR and Teddy Roosevelt, so his isolationist foreign policy is not necessarily surprising. However, the U.S. has made tons of strides in foreign relations and alliances since the early-mid twentieth century. It's not time to go backwards on agreements and alliances that are already fragile. Depending on just how big trump is on isolationism the future of NATO could be at stake. Foreign leaders are starting to realize that this, and Trump, are nothing to be joked about.

  1. Overall, and I'm going to be honest here, the sinking feeling of hopelessness I feel here makes me feel all the worse for what our American future holds in store.
