Due to the recent debacle in North Carolina where the state passed a law that transgender students must use the restroom and change in the rooms that correspond to their gender at birth, there has been an ongoing argument over the rights of transgender students. This month, the state was sued by the Justice Department on the grounds that the law was discriminatory. Obama recently presented an argument saying that he believes transgender students should use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity. He said that it is society's obligation to maintain equal and fair rights for all citizens.
I think the president, with his large amount of power, stating that he believes transgender students should use the bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity is a really good step in the right direction. We are a country based on the belief that all people are created equal therefore we should all be given equal rights. Denying transgender students the right to use the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity is like returning back to the days of segregated facilities for black and white citizens. By giving these students their rights, we are staying true to our philosophy as a country and continuing to maintain the equal standard among citizens.
