The government has said that all public schools must allow transgender to students to use the correct bathroom. Though it is not a law, if schools do not follow it they may lose funding, and the letter is pretty clear and explicit. Republicans, including ones in Texas, are critical of this and very upset about it.
I think this is an important social step forward. It can be synthesized to other progressive reforms, like in the progressive era when muckrakers fought for corrupt things to change, or the woman's rights movement, fighting for the vote. Even more recently, the gay rights movement is also similar to this. Throughout American history, people have fought for change and seen it happen, and this is no different.
