Demand for diversity in national parks-Nicholas Watson, 9th (4)

Summary:
A unique coalition of more than 30 civil rights, environmental justice and conservation groups are pushing for greater efforts to show diversity in national parks and other public land. The group refers to itself as the Centennial Initiative due to the fact that this marks the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. As this group gains strength it hopes to increase the use of national parks by minorities, the employment of minorities at the parks and the number of parks that highlight the role of minorities in American history.

Analysis:
Just as America is hitting the peak of political, racial and civil rights turmoil I think that the push towards accomplishing the goals previously stated is a fantastic way to help unify a nation with something so historic, patriotic and "American", as those of the National Parks. Instead of violence and protests, this peaceful movement really does signify and show that drive to re unify and nation, torn by the erosion of racial tension, by attempting to accept and incorporate the swath of diverse cultures, in which this nation was built on, through the roots of America and it's beauty; the National Parks. With such a great place to start the change, I can only imagine the amount of progress American citizens will have taken in the years to come. Like seen in the desegregation of the U.S. Army, schools and public facilities, this is just another movement in the long trek to unify a great nation.

  1. I think that this is a good initiative being taken. While a seemingly small task, this is a big change developing.
