Summary: The Maryland judge acquitted Baltimore Police Officer Edward Nero of all charges in the very controversial case of Freddie Gray. He was the second of six officers to face trial and the first to obtain a verdict. Nero wasn't found guilty of assault, misconduct in office, or reckless endangerment. After the verdict came out, the mayor made a statement to ask for the public to remain calm during this time. Apparently, Nero will still face a full administrative review from the police department, but he was able to escape any actual punishment due to the fact that he supposedly only touched Gray once and that he wasn't even that involved in the arrest.
Analysis: I understand where the police department is coming from with trying to make this situation come to some sort of conclusion without offending anyone. Of course, those responsible for Gray's death should be held accountable because despite whatever crime he committed, he still has rights and they should've been respected. However, I think it was smart to not let this case go to trial in front of jury just because of the fact that this is such a touchy subject and the final decision could have been biased.
