On Sunday, August 26, a shooting occured at a gaming tournament in Jacksonville, FL. One of the two men killed had won the Madden Classic National Tournament two years before, and the other was a former highschool football player. The shooting also left ten wounded from gunshots and one person injured that was not gunshot related. On monday, August 27, the sheriff identified the two victims as Elijah Clayton and Taylor Robertson. A cousin of Elijah stated that their family was "devastated by yet another senseless act of gun violence." The gunman was identified as David Katz, a 24-year-old gamer from Baltimore. The police have not relleased a motive, but have said that Katz used at least one handgun in the shooting.
These shootings and "senseless [acts] of gun violence" will prevail if no one does anything for gun reform. How many children and adults have to die in the hands of a gunman for the people in power to understand that something needs to be done? It is very hard to say that guns arent to blame when a gun was used to kill these young men, and in the Sandy Hook shooting, and the Stoneman Douglas shooting, and various others. Adults expect young people to participate in politics and contribute in their communities, but when they try to speak up about what is affecting their present and future, no one seems to listen.

Thank you for sharing this. This is a great example of how to complete the current events blog. This is another tragic event in our current history. What do you think we can do to stop these senseless acts of violence from happening again and again?
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said Grecia a lot of adults keep expecting people to speak up and contribute but when the younger generations do no one really listens to their voice or takes what they are saying into consideration.
ReplyDeleteI agree that gun reform is a reasonable request when gun use happens to be the common factor in each of the similar, tragic events. There needs to be more strict gun laws to prevent unstable individuals from getting firearms.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the need for gun reform laws in order to prevent tragedies like this from happening again. I also agree that adults need to not be so hypocritical with the younger generations and start to help up make a change to promote the safety of everyone.
