“They look so innocent. They’re not innocent.”- Mason Crumpacker

Summary:  Administration officials claim that the unaccompanied minors are taking advantage of loopholes in the current immigration system.  Minors may not be indefinitely detained and rarely appear for their court hearings after released.  Estimates show that fewer then 4% of unaccompanied minors are ever deported.  President Trump warned at a roundtable meeting on Wednesday that these unaccompanied immigrant minors are vulnerable to gang recruitment.  Trump has focused much of his immigration reform and anti-crime rhetoric on the infamous MS-13 gang calling them " animals."  Conversely, immigration advocates claim the children in question are asylum seekers fleeing violence in their home countries and do not significantly contribute to gang related violence.

Analysis: Trump's tough stance against illegal immigration was a leading cause of his campaign victory.  His continued attacks on illegal immigration serve to embolden and invigorate his base.  However, many in the immigrate community object to his strong and divisive language saying it "dehumanizes" immigrants.  Trump risks also activating his opposition whenever he attacks the immigrant community.

Immigration: Is Trump Ignoring the Obvious Solution?- Mason Crumpacker

Summary:  Despite his vigorous support during his campaign of employers using E-Verify to screen the immigration status potential new hires, President Trump has remained silent the screening program since taking office.
Eight states currently require employers to use E-Verify, but Trump has not encouraged expansion into other states as part of his immigration reform.

Source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/trump-is-very-weak-on-this-one-popular-way-to-curb-illegal-immigration/2018/05/22/adf5f85e-399b-11e8-acd5-35eac230e514_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.a38e86a4c305

Analysis:  E- Verify is overwhelmingly popular among voters.  The Washington Post quotes its own poll that showed 80% support for the screening program.  Then how to explain Trump's apparent lack of support?  Perhaps it would drive up wages, unemployment is at record lows and demand for workers is high for jobs historically filled by immigrant labor.  If E-Verify became mandatory and undocumented workers were no longer able to fulfill these jobs then wages would rise above what employers are willing to pay. Restaurant owner, Steve Carb complains, "There are people who are willing to work and pay taxes, but they can's get jobs because we can't legally hire them.

Furthermore, if jobs were no longer easily available then the temptation to risk illegal immigration would be curbed.  Small business owner, Bruce L. Dusenberry, explains “If employers were required to follow the law just like they scream about immigrants following the law, it would reduce the demand. We wouldn’t need the military going down to the border.”

How can we test the president's true support for immigration reform in the workplace?  One simple question: does the Trump Cooperation use E-Verify for all its properties, or only those were the program is mandated?

Title X and Reagan Policies in 2018- Julia Hunt

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2018/05/18/612445385/what-does-trumps-proposal-to-cut-planned-parenthood-funds-mean

With the possible arrival of a Reagan-like policy emerging from the federal budget, family planning facilities would be banned from abortion referrals and make those facilities separate from those that perform abortions. All of these seems like campaign follow through from Trump's campaign promise to defund Planned Parenthood, an organization that supplies many other health services than abortion.
This policy originates from Reagan trying to exclude Title X, a program adopted by Nixon and pushed by the representative George H. W. Bush that provided wellness exams, contraceptive services, cancer screenings, and STD screening to citizens, who were mostly lower class young women, from funding birth control by making it only available through parental consent to teens. He also tried to eliminate abortion referral as a "gag rule", dissociating Title X funding with organizations that provided abortions. During George H. W. Bush's administration, this was upheld through Rust v. Sullivan. However, in his second day of office, Bill Clinton revoked the policy.
In this new policy, everything is basically the same. As of right now, Planned Parenthood is questioning taking legal action due to the process of ratifying such thing with OMB reviews and possible changes coming.

Santa Fe School Shooting- Julia Hunt

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/05/18/612286146/shooting-reported-at-high-school-near-houston

This Friday, a school shooting in Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, occured, killing 10. The shooter was Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a 17 year old student, whose social media and personal journals show signs for the plan. He was going to commit suicide along with his killing, but "his courage" failed him. Among the dead was a foreign exchange student from Pakistan, Sabika Sheikh. The killer was armed with his father's shotgun and revolver and had a CO2 device and a Molotov cocktail in his possession.
In one of the interviews, one student, when asked if she thought this would happen to her, responded by saying that she always thought this might happen to her (https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/18/us/texas-school-shooting-victims/index.html). Her almost dismissive response shows the climate in which my generation is growing up in, a world where school shootings seem almost normal to us. Those in leadership have responded with their usual "thoughts and prayers" which has definitely gotten old and repetitive. I honestly have no idea if this is going to do anything in a legislative perspective, but I gotta hope. In conclusion, we experienced another mass death in our generation and I hope we can rise past it.

Oil Prices // Trevor Turnbow

article

Summary :In 2018 we have seen a distinct rise in the prices of oil. Last week the price per barrel hit $80 the highest in four years, and it's projected to rise to $100 in the coming months. This is not unexpected as the global economy has been running very efficiently, and thus more consumers leading to more demand and a spike in oil. Unforeseen events, such as the crisis in Venezuela & Trump's decision to pull out of the Iran Nuclear Deal have had some negative effects; however,  economists predict that, barring any new geopolitical shock, oil prices will fall again as we move into 2019. The federal reserve plans to triple interest rates, and OPEC's firm hand on oil supply will even things out and lead to less demand and more supply.

Analysis: I think that examining the economy and how political action and social ideals can affect the global economy drastically. It's kind of annoying that gas prices are going up, but you know I'm hopeful that this articles predictions are correct and that in the coming months everything will even out.

Synthesis: Middle Eastern Oil Embargo, Iraq, OPEC, NAFTA.

Caroline Carter-Santa Fe High School shooting

17 year old Dimitrios Pagourtzis entered Santa Fe High School on Friday and opened fire on his classmates, killing 10 and wounding 10 others. Details about the shooter's life and character are slowly coming out, including his plans for the shooting. Files on his cell phone and computer have shown that Pagourtzis intended to steal weapons legally owned by his father and commit suicide after the rampage. However, he was unable to follow through with the final step of his plan and is now being held in a Galveston County jail. Law enforcement has been speaking with Pagourtzis's classmates in an attempt to uncover a motive, and has received contradictory evidence so far. A fellow member of the high school's football team stated that only Thursday he had been joking around with the shooter and never suspected he could be capable of mass murder. Other classmates said they weren't surprised when they heart it was Pagourtzis who committed the shooting, saying that he always seemed strange and different and was bullied in school. Officials working on the investigation have not discovered any red flag warning signs like those that were present in the case of the Parkland shooting earlier this year.

This latest school shooting can be connected and compared to almost every shooting in American history. The ease with which people are able to legally able to purchase weapons created with the intent that they would be used to kill, whether it be game or enemy soldiers overseas, must cease. I believe that it is impossible to completely outlaw guns and that a move that bold could possibly lead to a rise in the popularity of bombings. However, there must be a stronger background check system in place to protect the lives of students, workers, and church and club goers.  The strength that a single sentence written two centuries ago holds over modern society is scary. When the founding fathers penned the 2nd amendment, they couldn't even dream of a weapon that could be reloaded so fast that it would be capable of mass killing. "Protect our freedom" cannot be used as an excuse to bear life threatening arms anymore. Freedom to be killed by our fellow citizens cannot be called freedom at all.

House Farm Bill Collapses Amid Republican Disarray- David Bagley

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/18/us/farm-bill-collapses.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=first-column-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

Political squabbles in the house cause a republican-dominated government to fail the passage of another bill. This bill would have helped low income farmers grow, but at the cost of undermining the clean water, and endangered species acts. Usually the republicans whose views differ slightly from the rest were too little to impact the outcome, but the failure of the bills was caused by them this time, posing perhaps a larger threat in the long run.

This can relate to the actual passage of the Clean water and Endangered species acts, as they were largely unexpected due to the political affiliation of the president, but in a similar manner, a republican dominant government fails to pass a very expected bill by them due to a silent majority among them.

Ten killed in Texas high school shooting by student firing his father’s guns, governor says- David Bagley

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/education/wp/2018/05/18/reports-of-shots-fired-at-high-school-near-houston/?utm_term=.2b7adeb65b60

Today, a mass shooting occurred in Houston, Tx. 10 died due to the shooter and 10 more injured. His father had no idea that the son had his guns in his possessions and had no idea of planning online and evidence online that he planned to do so. But different than a lot of cases in history, the shooter was apprehended.

In recent history the war on terror and terrorist attacks in our country terrify everybody, but its almost ironic the negligence we place on our own citizens and their actions, Trump's main voting majority is an older audience, all of which rarely effected by school shootings. This also relates to the student movement and the lowering of the voting age as the 3 year gap could pose entirely different social circumstances.

Trump administration will pull funds from groups that perform abortions or provide referrals- David Bagley

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/to-your-health/wp/2018/05/18/planned-parenthood-likely-to-lose-millions-under-trump-administrations-new-title-x-family-planning-rules/?utm_term=.d8b59a7927dd

The trump administration plans to pull funding from companies that perform abortions. They say it is better for the women, and that abortion clinics violate the law. He considers them not health care and states the funds will go to other "health care" specialized centers, appeasing to anti-choice supporters.

This relates to the women's civil rights movement. The Roe v. Wade court case ruled that planned parenthood was constitutional, even though its still very controversial. The right to choose raising a child was a very large advancement for the movement and should not be taken away

Mueller investigation enters Year Two: What comes next — and how it could end- David Bagley

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2018/05/17/mueller-trump-russia-investigation-one-year-anniversary/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.25cc12685306

The Meuller investigation reaches its second year- trying to find ties between trump, russia, and the 2016 election. Trump disregards the search as nothing more than a threat to america and a shameless witch hunt. Throughout the past 12 months the search has accused many and found many guilty pleas- making it ultimately worthwhile.

This can allude to back when McCarthy accused many house representatives of communist affiliations, which may be the reason trump sees it as a witch hunt against him as it was of that nature for McCarthy's time.

Louisiana school agrees to stop public prayer for good- Chloe Walker

A school district in Louisiana begins to question some of its customs, which have allegedly violated 1st amendment rights. The case sparked frustration throughout the town of Webster Parish, a town heavily influenced by Christianity. " For our family, religion is a deeply private matter, and school officials have no business interfering with my daughter's personal religious beliefs," Christy Cole. Prayers were broadcasted over the speaker each morning. This lead to the discussion of an unconstitutional indoctrination of student promoted by the teachers and faculty of the school.

This article was created by Mallory Simon and Nick Valencia of CNN. Before this article I had no knowledge of this event. This effects my understanding of the article because I myself am a Christian and can understand the viewpoint of the small town. This article was written to show how religion can be questioned and taken away from the government. This article leaves a positive affect on the audience since its a cause for freedom of religion, which leads into the importance of the article. This article can relate towards the Pilgrims and their escape to the Americas for freedom of religion.

Trump Failure to Disclose Cohen Payments - Sam Romine

In the recent FBI raid on Cohen's office, documents were found suggesting an affair between the President and Stormy Daniels. Daniels was paid $130,000 as "hush money" and Trump claimed to have no knowledge of the payment. Recently, however, it was uncovered that Trump reimbursed Cohen for over $100,000, which suggests he not only knew about the payment but lied to the public about it. His financial reports last June (after the time of the payment) did not show Trump's reimbursement of Cohen, which, if willful, is a federal crime.

Transparency is important in any government, and the situation that is developing in the United States mirrors the credibility gap that was opened in the 60s and 70s because of President's failures to report on the situation in Vietnam. The Pentagon Papers, Iran-Contra Scandal, the bombing runs in Cambodia all contributed to this. This time, our President's failure to report his finances and his affair are causing the already wide gape to be forced further open.

"One Year of Mueller's Special Counsel Investigation, By The Numbers" - Sam Romine

Thursday marks the one year anniversary of the beginning of special counsel Mueller's investigation. Thus far, Mueller has charged 22 people and companies, brought about 75 total criminal charges, achieved 5 guilty pleas, and 1 person has been sentenced. Mueller's original purpose was to uncover a possible collusion between Trump and Russia in the 2017 election, but so far no such connection has been made. Trump has heavily criticized Mueller's investigation, calling it a "witch hunt" in one of his tweets. Despite his publicized dislike of the investigation, Trump has cooperated, reportedly giving over 20 thousand pages of documents from the White House and 1.4m pages provided by the campaign itself. He also has suggested he would like to speak with Mueller in a testimony as long as "he is treated fairly."

These events can by synthesizes to Watergate. Despite no glaring allegations have been made against Trump, the fact his administration's behavior called for a special investigation speaks for itself. Mueller needs to continue his quest to purify the White House and create a safer, more transparent America.

Hawaii's Kilauea: Explosive Eruption at Volcano - Sam Romine

A volcanic eruption in Hawaii at the Kilauea has devastated the surrounding area, creating an ash cloud that caused a red aviation code to be issued. The warning is meant to prevent pilots from flying through the potentially damaging cloud surrounding the volcano. Many officials monitoring the volcano and nearby families have already been evacuated. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanos in the world, erupting continuously for 30 years.

This eruption can be synthesized to the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980, resulting in 57 deaths and many more animal casualties. The volcanic activity that occurred during the eruption consisted of a plume of ash that shot up 16 miles into the Earth's atmosphere - almost a fourth of the distance to space, a 300 m.p.h. landslide, and the lowering of the crater by thousands of feet in seconds.

North Korea Summit: Trump Says no 'Libya Model' - Sam Romine

The North Korea summit, which is set for June 12 possibly in Singapore, has not been cancelled despite repeated threats from North Korea because of military drills occurring in South Korea. Trump has commented on the matter, saying that the US would not follow the "Libya Model" in which Libya's political leader Muammar Gaddafi was assassinated less than a decade after agreeing to forfeit the countries nuclear weapons. Trump has also said that he believes the meeting will be successful and complemented the South Korean people.

The "Libya Model" can be synthesized to many countries during the Cold War in the Middle East where Western-backed rebels assassinated many leaders to prevent the spread of communism. The talks themselves could be synthesized to the Detentes that occurred during the Nixon Administration that lessened tensions. Hopefully, for the good of the US and the good of the civilized world, these talks take place and are wildly successful. A consequence of this not occurring would be nuclear war resulting in the destruction of our planet, which further emphasizes the necessity of peace between the US and North Korea.

Gina Haspel Confirmed as CIA's First Female Director - Sam Romine

Today Gina Haspel was confirmed in a 54-45 majority to become the new CIA Director, following Mike Pompeo, who resigned to become the successor to Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State. Ms. Haspel is a longtime CIA operative, and oversaw torture at a black site in Thailand during the Bush Administration. This type of torture was banned under the Obama Administration, and the fact she oversaw it being carried out caused many senators to cross party lines. 3 Republicans voted against her, and, despite her allegations, 6 Democrats voted for her.

Ms. Haspel's confirmation in the Senate greatly mirrors last November when President Trump was elected. Despite allegations against him, Trump won the election, and the same went for Ms. Haspel. Elected officials that have controversies surrounding them under this current administration is the last thing we need, and we can only hope that the controversy will not follow controversy and Ms. Haspel will lead the CIA in a direction that is beneficial for the country.

Explosive Eruption in Hawaii: Hannah Karim

The past week or so in Hawaii, an eruption has been taking place and much of the Big Island has been evacuated due to major damage from lava and molten spreading around the island. Just today, an ashfall advisory has been issued for the Ka'u district. The USPS has also restricted delivery to parts of the island and there have been issued no-entry zones to Hawaii as well.

"Come and Take it": Hannah Karim

Kent State graduate Kaitlin Bennet posed with an AR-10 rifle with the caption "Come and take it", which has sparked up a lot of controversy on the internet over the last few days. Bennett states that her right to the second amendment allows her to carry this weapon legally and grant her protection on campus. This is a controversial topic especially because 4 were killed in the 1970s at this college from a shooting. This is extremely relevant to our current political state in the fight for gun control and stricter laws.

Power Outages in Puerto Rico: Hannah Karim

Since Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico in early September, more than 3.4 billion hours of electricity have been lost. The only blackout larger than Puerto Rico's was the one that followed Typhoon Haiyan which struck the Philippines in 2013. About 6.1 billion hours of electricity were lost after. This blackout in Puerto Rico is already the worst in U.S. history, beating out Hurricane Sandy. As of right now, about 96% of the island's power has been restored, but around 200,000 still don't have electricity; seven months after the storm.

Spotify cracking down on inappropriate music - Avery Vance

Recently, Spotify music streaming services began updating their terms of service on what they consider inappropriate. This allows them to take off any music that they deem bad. Some people believe that this is an infringement on musicians freedom of expression however it has been proven to be perfectly within their rights as a service.

I think that it shouldn't matter what someone makes as art is. The audience viewing the art will support it if they want to support it and they won't watch it if they don't want to and we shouldn't have too big a say in that.

Kelly Sadler backlash - Avery Vance

Kelly Sadler recently commented on statements made by senator John McCain in a manner that received her much backlash from the public. In regards to the senators opposition to recent white house objectives, Sadler dismissed him with the comment "he's dying anyway", referencing McCains brain cancer.

I really think that if a statement like that is made by a member of the white house staff, they should be fired, and if not fired then they should be severely reprimanded. You can't say things like that when you are in a position of power. Your word carries weight and people take it seriously.

http://money.cnn.com/2018/05/15/news/companies/gap-tshirt-map-of-china/index.html

Gap has apologized for a map of China on one of its T shirts that upset internet users in the country. A user on Chinese social network Weibo posted a photo of the shirt and complained that its design left out Taiwan and its islands claimed by Beijing in the South China Sea. The Chinese government in Beijing considers self-governed Taiwan to be an integral part of its territory and comes down hard on any suggestions to the contrary. Gap responded to the criticism on Weibo by announcing it had pulled the T shirts from the Chinese market and destroyed them and they apologized. The company didn't say whether the product would be withdrawn from sale in other markets.
This is significant in US history because of this T shirt situation, China has engaged in a campaign this year to force international companies to toe the line when it comes to Taiwan and its "One China" policy. They sent international airlines written threats of severe punishments if they don't change their websites to declare Taiwan is part of China. China is very serious about Taiwan being an integral part of their country, and hopefully all nations in the world including the US have this clear!

The Big One- Jon Slavinskas

Usually Hawaiians will jump at the mention of “The Big One”, usually a wave coming to mind. But lately volcanic action has turned the phrase into somewhat of a tentative warning to those living on one of the many islands. Props to all you folks doin this stuff now. The volcano has been bubbling for days, and many officials fear an eruption that would cause massive damage to the island and its people on top of the already damaged path of the  magma flow.

The North Koren regime has a knack for pulling out of negotiations at the last minute as well as raising the stakes just before by threatening to do so and the U.N. summit is no exception. Pyongyang has officially threatened to cease talks if the US approaches the situation as it did Libya or with a unilateral method. This is not unusual, and is one step in the seeminingly right direction for the current administration.

Missing Girl by Terror Organization || 5-15-2018 || Chloe Villa-Abrille

Leah remains to be the last of the 110 schoolgirls that were targeted by the terror group Boko Haram, these students were kidnapped after they refused to give up their Christian faith to Boko Harma in February at their school in Dapchi. This terror organization has done this before, once kidnapping 300 Chibok schoolgirls and then in total they've kidnapped over 1,000 children. They stand against Western Education and steal students as to prevent parents from letting them go to a school that teaches by Western education and the prevention of different religious beliefs. Rebecca, Leah's mother was left in a state of dismay as she learned he daughter would not be returning, she spoke about how the school was ill prepared for the situation, guards weren't there that day, the government only took part once the story was being covered, and if her daughter does comeback she will not continue going to that school as scholarships have been provided to a nearby school.
With the government in turmoil, there is no one to enforce protection over the citizens and students. It's horrible to see the extreme ideals of a terror organization corrupt the next generation on minds, and there's not too much that can be done, anything that is done poses a risk to peoples lives, and with no order within the war-torn country it is almost impossible to take down these terror groups with out an organized military group. The war on terror continues to rage ever since the US was brought into it with 9-11 and the previous bombings by terror organizations, ever since then the US has kept a steady flow of troops within that area of the world in hopes of  reducing and minimize terror organizations from spreading; however, this seems like a reoccurring problem that wont end until advancements in their government is made.

True Diary- Jon Slavinskas

Researchers Uncover Two Hidden Pages in Anne Frank’s Diary - The New York Times
https://apple.news/APQ4YAaZaRHOZBk31We4LbQ

 — Anne Frank tried to cover up two pages of writing in her diary that contained dirty jokes and a description of what she referred to as “sexual matters,” pasting brown paper over the pages in her red-and-white plaid notebook.

“I sometimes imagine that someone might come to me and ask me to inform him about sexual matters,” Frank wrote in Dutch. “How would I go about it?” She attempts an answer, addressing an imaginary listener with a lofty tone, using phrases such as “rhythmical movements” to describe sex, and “internal medicament,” to refer to contraception.
She also touches on menstruation, “a sign that she is ripe,” and prostitution: “In Paris they have big houses for that.”

When asked about the privacy of Frank, a scientist said:  “It’s not always good to follow the wish of an author,” she said. “It’s important sometimes for scientific research and also good to know for the public what she didn’t want to publish.”

-- analysis
Anne Frank's diary (and her book, "The Secret Annex") are revolutionary for a myriad of reasons- one of the most notable being the raw truth behind a real, live teenage girl hiding away during quiet possibly the most memorable event in history. There has never been anything like it, and for the sake of humanity let's hope there aren't anymore. Though Anne deserves respect and privacy, the minute she decided to write those pages she chose to have them possibly somehow discovered. There is no way the event of her family being captured and her diaries being tossed into the unknown streets of Amsterdam did not cross her mind; In fact, I can prove that via her diary.  Of course, the problematic nature stems from scientists and historians recovering works Anne herself thought to be as good as evaporated. Anne did intend herself to be famous, and from the personality I can gather from her writings I feel she would be a little embarrassed, but not enraged at the attention she is still getting. It's a small price to pay for her immortality.

Israel defends Gaza crackdown as Palestinians bury their dead - CNN
https://apple.news/ARKxVKFszQpaZXKu6GG1nyg

Funerals took place across Gaza on Tuesday, a day after Israeli troops fired on Palestinians gathered at the border to protest the relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. 62 died in all.
But the United States expressed strong backing for Israel, blaming the deaths on Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza and which encouraged the protests. "Make no mistake, Hamas is pleased with the results from yesterday," said Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations.
----
Honestly, I have no idea what's going on in the middle east right now. I cannot be certain but this sounds a lot like the start of the Mexican American war and even our war with Spain.
Yes, I have no idea what's going on, but I rarely believe death is necessary- especially on civilian protesters on their side of the border. That is a problem, but not as big as a problem as the United States once again being petty. Blaming the death of 62 people on an Islamist group that may or may not have been involved does nothing but harm. Once again, our president offers no aid but offers plenty of matches for foreign affairs to light themselves on fire.

Residents of Gaza Continue to Fight || Chloe Villa-Abrille

Gaza citizens have not yet put an end to the fighting against Hamas, Israel forces, and the Palestinian Authority. The protest has managed to stay alive for 70 year now, and only grows stronger with the addition of a US Embassy in Jerusalem, only causing things to get more heated. The introduction of the Dahiya doctrine continues to makes things worse as enforced military by the Israeli military comes into action, thus resulting in the death of 110 Gazans and with a towering 12,000 injured, and growing, with that being from just today to 6 weeks ago. The conditions of the land are extremely unstable, dehumanization by war and others occur to almost all of the Gazans as Hamas refuses to recognize Israel as a country, thus resulting in the mistreatment of Palestinians. The area is in turmoil at the moment, not only does the government clash, but also the people have gone through so much, as around 80% of people had their home raided and with the fact of around a fourth of men have been imprisoned.
This issue is of long conflicted and multi-sided battles, a non-negotiable situation, and something that will not be easily resolved. Palestinian culture enforces, "sumud," where a top priority is to maintain the land that their culture was founded on, thus no one is giving in for this war and will continue to fight until one army diminishes or another army with strength, or a new one steps in to end the war. The US will most likely get involved, especially with the addition of the embassy there; however America is reluctant to join in wars because of isolationism and fear of getting dragged into too big of a war, the US really only joins the fight once it turely effects them, like with the war on terror coming from 9-11, and then WWI and WWII also was due to the personal offence to America by Pearl Harbor, treaties, and such.

The Biography of John C. Calhoun

Researched By Brandon Min

Funny Things Category Because Its Nearing the End of the Year

In March 18, 1782 John Caldwell Calhoun was born in the Abbeville District of South Carolina. He showed much scholastic talent at a young age, so with the help of his brothers, he went to Yale University in Connecticut. He later became a Patriot during the American Revolution and one of the opposers of ratification of the US Constituion on the basis of states' rights and personal liberties.
In 1811, he married Floride B. Calhoun.  Interesting fact, she was a first cousin once removed. Together they had 10 children. In 1812, he became one of the leaders of the War-Hawk Party that advocated for the War of 1812.   After the war, he began to advocate for a more strengthened and centralized War Department, since it was very disorganized and uncentral during the war. He also advocated a for a Second Charter of the National Bank believing it would the help the American economy prosper.
In 1828, he became Vice President to President Andrew Jackson. He would serve 2 terms with President Jackson. They didn't agree on many things which would eventually lead eventually lead to the Nullification Crisis. This event had pretty much ended his hope for ever becoming president since no major poltical party would even nominate him. Instead, he became a senator for the Whig Party.  He would then become Secretary of State under John Tyler, and then become a senator again.
In March 31, 1850 he died of tuberculosis St Philip's Churchyard. It was later removed for fear of desecration by soldiers during the Civil War ,but it was later moved back.
His legacy has an imprint in US history as it appears time and again, but his biggest legacy in my opinion is being hated by our APUSH teacher the most. Not even Hitler nor Stalin, it was Calhoun.
That's all folks! I had probably better start running the moment I post this and never show up to class again.

Ashley Neece North Korea Cancles

Korth Korea has cancled its agreed talk with South Korea, ment to happen tommarow, because of U.S. wepons testing in South K.  North K. reliest a statement saying it went aginist the Panmujom Declaration, and was intentional to disrupt positve political development in Korea as a whole. Currntly we are not sure how Trump plans to respond. The U.S. have had tentions eversence the Korean war (1950-1953) dividing the penisula in two causing the summits needed today all as a reason to stop the spreed of communisum.

Explosion in CA

One person was killed Tuesday and three others injured in an explosion in a medical building in Aliso Viejo, California, authorities said. The explosion burst walls and windows, bringing great damage to the first floor of the two story building. Debris was also thrown outside the building in the blast. No explosives have been found, nor is there evidence that this was a gas leak. Authorities are looking into this to see if this was an act of terrorism, but evidence of such motives has yet to be found. Although the victim’s injuries were consistent with those of an explosion, they were not necessarily consistent with those from a bomb. Authorities have said that the victims were limited to one suite in the building and all are accounted for.

This is similar to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory incident. This fire in the factory led to investigations and a deep movement of reform for better and safer working conditions for those who worked there.

North Korea Suspends South Korea Talks in Response to US-ROK Air Force Drills

North Korea warns US as it suspends South Korea talks over military drills

Source: CNN

Blog Post #5

Summary: Recently, North Korea has become interestingly interested in diplomacy after a series of nuclear tests. However, a recent ROK-US Air Force drill was conducted, and a warning was issued by Kim Jong Un threatening to suspend the June 12 summit in Singapore. This has occurred due to a recent agreement, the Panmonjum declaration which they agreed to stop all hostile acts against each other. However, talks are set to resume this week.

Analysis: This is somewhat controversial. It really depends on how you want to look at it. More hostile minded people have assumed that this a blatant attempt to get more concessions from South Korea or the US. I personally see it like that. It really does look like a blatant attempt to do so because Kim Jong Il did the same thing.

There are plastic bags in the deepest parts on the ocean- Isabella Firsching

A plastic grocery bag was found 36,000 feet below the surface of the ocean, in the deepest ocean trench. The trench is one of the most secluded and hard to reach places on Earth, and the presence of plastic is a true eyeopener in the future of plastic pollution. THis isn’t limited to one plastic bag, many deep sea environments in japan are clogged with plastic trash. 3400 pieces of debris were found, and past 19000 feet, 50% of the debris was single use plastic. Chemical pollution has also been found in deep sea trenches and waterways. Several states and countries have banned plastic bags and straws, a step in the right direction.

I synthesised this with the Clean Water Act, enacted in 1948 in an effort to protect both public water sources and aquatic environments. The CWA was reevaluated and reorganized in 1972. I also associated this with the coral bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef, because all of the damage was caused by humans/human activity.

The USDA kills hundreds of cats every year- Isabella Firsching

After an investigation, it was revealed that the USDA has been using tax dollars to raise cats, infect them with parasites, study them, and then kill them when they are no longer needed. 2 month old kittens are infected with intestinal parasites through raw meat and after being studied, the kittens are euthanized and their bodies are burned. The claim for why the kittens are not instead adopted out is that it is a danger to public healthy, this was proven to be completely false. The revealed information encouraged many citizens to call the USDA and complain.
Animal testing has been used for centuries to test anything from effects of disease to cosmetics. More recently the use of animal testing has been widely frowned upon and many companies have turned towards less harmful ways of testing. The USDA has been using (and killing) cats since 1982, and the truth is finally out. For more than 2 decades cats have been euthanized  for no other reason than convenience and i'm really happy that there may be a change.

Protests in Gaza- Jon Slavinskas

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/15/world/middleeast/israel-gaza-protests.html

Events in Gaza escalated recently after repeated Hamas protests flooded a central square, only to be met by armed and violent resistance from Israeli forces who fired on the peaceful protest with more than just bullets. Tear gas allegedly killed an eight-year-old girl, altogether the validity of the claim is under scrutiny by the Israelis. The death toll reached an estimated 58 killed, with thousands injured. This is one of they smalller protests arranged by the Hamas group in Gaza, who are now calling for violent vengeance for those killed. The killings are flooding the world with images of Israeli brutality  that send a message of what kind of tolerance the Israel is running in its government. A very telling and hypocritical stance from the current US administration that supports “freedom” and “natural rights” but supports a state that fires on peaceful protesters.

Jeson Aviles - Memory Transferring Among Living Bodies

By injecting the genetic material RNA from a trained snail and into an untrained snail, memory transfer has been made successful by US scientists. The snails behaved as if they remembered receiving miniature electric shocks, although it never happened to them.

This is an example of how technology and science continues to evolve in it’s accomplishments and capabilities to reach success. Technological innovation and evolution such as this can be noticed in the advances of the 70s.

Jeson Aviles - Dogs Being Poisoned in Russia

In “preparation” for the World Cup, Russia has cities contracting companies to “catch” and put strays into non-existent shelters. In reality, cities such as Sochi have contracts created to eliminate a specific number of strays through means of poison darts and other methods to kill in domesticated animals on the streets with poison. This is not the first time such an event has occurred, a similar case happened before the Winter Games initiated.

There’s great mistrust in the Russian government and lies that are fed to the public from them simply increase the unsettling view the citizens receive of their country leaders. Sound familiar? Quite a trend to “misplace” truth to the public in America. Watergate Scandal is a thought. And Trump.

Jeson Aviles - NJ Gay Prom Couple

As Lacey High juniors walked home from their school’s prom, a crowd on a rooftop bar would cheer out to the passing couples with “Kiss Her!” and explode in laughter and more cheering. Theodore Vidal and Colin Beyers were fearful on how the patrons of the bar would react to their relationship as they passed, donned in matching dark blue suits and pink ties and united together with hand-holding. But instead of the expected negativity and insults, they were greeted with yelling of “Kiss Him!!!”, which they obeyed like the other couples and received praise and happiness for.

While this is a sweet moment and reflection that there’s increased support for LGBT couples, this was a single moment of acceptance and wholesomeness and not a defined view that everyone is supportive. Just like some of the positive efforts and results of the Civil Rights Movement and even the 6/26 same-sex marriage right passed during Obama’s presidency, it is not a downright solution or sign that everything is fixed, but is either a symbol of a step towards positivity or a sign that our efforts are working.

Controlling weather-jade pierre

China has been scraping up a plan to be able to “control the weather”. Their plan is to create thousands of rain making machines then scatter them across the Himylian Tibetan Plateau. This is all going to work by each machine seeding in the sky and forming a 5k long storm cloud.  Then the water vapor condenses and it rains on demand. They are doing this because due to climate change rain fall has been decresing.
In my opinion I think this is really cool and it will help bring back what we used to have. Throw back to Earth Day when awarness was first spread about climate change.

President Donald Trump said in a tweet on Sunday that he's working to give China's ZTE "a way to get back into business, fast." ZTE, a smartphone and telecom equipment maker that does business around the world, announced last week that it has halted its main operations after the Trump administration banned American companies from selling it vital components. Trump's tweet said: "Too many jobs in China lost. Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!" The White House later issued a statement indicating that Trump expects Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross to exercise his independent judgment, consistent with applicable laws and regulations, to resolve the regulatory action involving ZTE based on its facts.
ZTE's current struggles have made it the most visible consequence for a trade war between the United States and China. Many people think it is good that Trumps is concerned about jobs in China, unlike Adam Schiff, a Democratic congressman from California, and tweeted: "trump should care more about our national security than Chinese jobs." This is will impact our country's history because Trump believes that China has unfair trade practices and the ban on ZTE is affecting American companies. This relates to the oil embargo in 1973 with the OPEC countries.

The death of a 22-year-old African-American man shortly after a struggle with police last week has been ruled homicide. Keeven Robinson died last Thursday, following a police chase and an altercation with narcotics detectives from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, located outside of New Orleans. Undercover detectives assigned to the case tracked Robinson down at a local gas station and tried to arrest him, but he jumped back into his vehicle and led the police on a chase. He rammed several police cars before crashing his own vehicle. An initial autopsy found significant traumatic injuries to the soft tissue of Robinson's neck, said Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich. Robinson's family is also seeking a second independent autopsy.
Keevan Robinson's death is very concerning and suspicious. Police brutality is a very serious topic in our country, but is controversial in this situation, according to the investigators of this case. This is important to US history because there are multiple deaths by police officers under investigation and are mostly caused by brutality and unnecessary violence.

Golden State Killer Suspect Faces Trial- Victoria Gonzalez

On Monday May 14, 2018 suspect Joseph James DeAngelo faces trial and appears in court for being suspect of infamous Golden State Killer. He is mainly under estimation for the modern of Sacramento couple in 1978 along with the murder of a dozen people and 50 rapes in 10 counties throughout the state of California. Surprisingly using an ancestry website-authorities stumbled upon relatives linked with DeAngelo’s DNA matching the samples from the crime scene. He now faces trial and the verdict remains unclear but hope has never been higher on the concept of catching one of the most brutal and dangerous criminals in the state of California. This is a major feat to those who have lost loves ones and those attempting to cease this kind of horrific violence towards women. I hope that he is in fact the killer meaning we've managed to put another threat behind bars and that the victim's families get some form of closure.

The commander and the senior enlisted adviser of a US Navy Seal team deployed to Africa have been relieved of their duties and sent home due to sexual misconduct allegations regarding multiple fellow US military female service members. Many of the Navy Seals in East Africa conduct operations in Somalia, where they advise Somali forces battling al-Shabaab, the local affiliate of al Qaeda. The two Navy seals that were sent home are being investigated by the Navy's Criminal Investigative Service. The allegations come in as special ops forces on the continent "have come under increasing scrutiny."
Sexual misconduct allegations towards women has been occurring a lot in the past year, and has caused many problems in our country. This horrible problem has been mostly focused in on the entertainment industry and is rarely revealed to have happened in the military. The Navy Seals have a very strong reputation and having sexual misconduct allegations regarding multiple of the commanders and advisers of the US Navy Seals makes our country look very bad. This could eventually cause women to remove themselves from the military and provoke another movement regarding this topic.

In this case the car engines are the reasons behind it because of the structure of the car it is unable to be heard. In the new cars they are designed to be able to use them without having to put a key in the emission which causes for a silent engine most of the time. Because the car is a push start the driver would often forget to turn the car off which gives off the CO3.

Chicago art exhibit aims to show how easy it is to get a gun-Sophie Sandoval

An artist in Chicago has made a metro gun sharing booth so you could easily access a gun whenever you choose to. However, this isn't real it's more symbolic. The piece shows how easy it is for a civilian to access a gun and has the power to do right or wrong. The gun violence in Chicago is very severe so the artist took this to heart very dearly. You cannot actually pay money to get a gun but you can pay money to donate to the Brady Center.

I think this artist could possibly change the course of gun violence. Of course, nobody is gonna rent a gun in public because they are simply a coward. If you were to rent a gun you would be judged and that is exactly what humans try to avoid, however, if he puts up more gun metros he could possibly lower the numbers for good.

The Hamilton Effect: Traveling to see the blockbuster theater

Tourist are getting more and more dedicated to see a musical or play when they travel. It is a growing trend partly because the Internet is making it easier to buy tickets. Chris Heywood, a spokesman for NYC & Company, New York's marketing organization, is known as "the Hamilton effect". The hit musical is now playing internationally and has stimulated interest in other musicals and broadened the audience base. Although newer musicals and plays dominate the desires of the most dedicated travelers, Broadway's older shows are more popular abroad. The hit musical Hamilton has brought many travelers to New York City, London, and Chicago to experience the show and many tourists visit these cities just to see it.

This article is significant in US history because it is about the impact that Hamilton the musical has made on people's vacations and the reason why they travel. This show helps educate the audience on the founding fathers and Hamilton's life while there is singing, dancing and acting. Hamilton is very important in our country because it is the first Broadway musical solely about US history and is very entertaining and has impacted the way people travel.

Connor Norton - MH370 experts think they’ve finally solved the mystery of the doomed Malaysia Airlines flight

Back in 2014, a Malaysian Airlines flight went missing with all its 239 occupants, none of whom would be seen again. The story of the missing plane went viral pretty immediately, and while families have been forced to come to terms with the deaths of the passengers, no bodies have actually been found, nor has the wreckage. Still, perhaps the biggest mystery of all is what went wrong in the first place, and experts have recently come to a fitting, if horrifying, conclusion: the pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah, purposefully incapacitated everyone aboard before crashing the plane in an act of mass-murder/suicide. The story goes that Zaharie rapidly depressurized the airplane, causing all unmasked occupants to pass out from a lack of oxygen before turning to fly past his home town of Penang, Malaysia in a series of turns previously inexplicable for those attempting to find the truth; he then crashed somewhere in the Indian Ocean. Though this explanation can't be proven until the wreckage is found, it is the only plausible sequence of events that accounts for all the evidence compiled by investigators working on the case.

This ties in to the history of Jonestown in which cult leader Jim Jones and the members of his People's Temple (the name for his cult) started a settlement in remote Guyana (long story), culminating in a mass murder/suicide event in which over 900 Jonestown residents were forced under duress to drink grape Flavor Aid laced with cyanide, resulting in the second greatest loss of american lives in one day behind 9/11. These are related as they involve a single individual in a position of power (at least situationally) who used that power to commit murderous and suicidal acts against an unsuspecting group of civilians, and both are terrible tragedies that one can only hope are never repeated in any way, shape, or form.

London Hibbs- MELANIA TRUMP IN HOSPITAL

Monday morning, First Lady Melania Trump underwent a surgical procedure for a “benign kidney condition.”  The White House said the procedure was successful and there were no complications. She is currently at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where she will remain this week. She is expected to make a full recovery.

President Trump visited her in the hospital and tweeted about the experience, thanking those who wished the First Lady well.  Melania jad an embolization procedure on her kidney. The procedure blocks the blood supply that feeds the kidney and can be used to stop growth or bleeding from a benign tumor. The Johns Hopkins guide said it is used to make it easier for a surgeon to remove the kidney if needed.

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/05/14/us/politics/melania-trump-kidney-surgery.html People question why she will remain in the hospital this week. A Dallas doctor stated that if this were any other person, they would be in and out in a day. Plus, if the medical condition really is “no big deal” , why is it necessary for her to remain in the hospital, especially right after the launch of her children’s kindness campaign.

Salmonella Outbreak Grows - Lauren Rothert

A salmonella outbreak that led to the recall of 207 million eggs has worsened, leading 35 people in several states to become ill. The initial recall notice was issued last month, and the number of illness is a dozen more now. This outbreak is linked to Rose Acre Farms whose eggs are distributed to restaurants and grocery stores such as Walmart. Although no deaths have been reported, at least 11 people have been hospitalized due to complications. The states affected include: Colorado, New Jersey, Florida, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina, and West Virginia.

Although Texas eggs are not affected as of right now, we still have to worry about the virus spreading. The last salmonella outbreak that was this bad was in 2010, and led to the recall of half a billion eggs. Hopefully, the virus is contained before it exceeds the 2010 outbreak, and infects thousands of other people.

Miami’s Christopher Columbus High School is facing many regrets over their prom this past weekend. Their theme was “Welcome to the Jungle”, so they brought a live caged tiger to the prom in the midst of crazy teenagers. There were other animals present as well, and everyone was recording videos of all the animals.
I cannot believe that the staff would approve of bringing a live tiger to prom. Prom can get so crazy already with the loud music, dancing, and uncontrollable teenagers. Bringing in live animals just makes everything more chaotic. This reminds me of the protests in the Civil Rights Movement when huge mobs would protest in the streets and things would get very crazy. People would give out speeches and everyone became really mesmerized, just like when everyone became really mesmerized with the tiger at prom.

55 Palestinian Protesters Killed, Gaza Officials Say, As U.S. Opens Jerusalem Embassy - Jack B

At 3 PM on Monday tens of thousands of Palestinians were protesting the opening of a new US embassy in Jerusalem. According to the the Gaza Health Ministry, Israeli army forces killed 55 protesters and around 2,770 injured during the protest. The Isreal Defense Force claimed they killed three protesters that were setting up a bomb near the security fence in Rafah.

Hawaii Residents Deal with Volcano - Taylor Townsend

A plume of ash from the Kilauea volcano rose 12,000 feet into the air before dropping ash on sections of the Big Island of Hawaii, prompting officials Tuesday to warn residents to stay indoors and airplanes to stay away from the area. The volcano could plug up as the magma level in the crater drops and the pressure below could build up. Geologists aren't exactly sure what caused Tuesday's slightly more intense ash emissions.

US Geological Survey officials have said a phreatic eruption could happen at Halemaumau crater at the top of the Kilauea volcano. And it could send ash plumes as far as 12 miles from the summit crater. Besides the ash, which is not poisonous, residents have to worry about choking on sulfur dioxide.

Shayne Grant: Kushner calls today a sign of peace in Israel

While one of the most deadly conflicts between in Israeli and Palestinian forces took place today, senior advisor Jared Kushner spent the day opening the new US Embassy in Jerusalem. Kushner called this time a time of peace and a time to come together. This event was one of few public speeches made by Kushner. While he spoke of peace, over 45 Palestinians were killed in the Gaza strip by Israeli forces. Many question if Kushner and the administration are looking for peace or if they are looking for a way to show their support for Israel.

While the move of the embassy is not a huge deal in my opinion, the timing of the speech could not have been worse. If Kushner was aware of the attacks, why would he call the day a sign of coming peace? it seemed to not give light the the horrors taking place on both sides of the conflict. This similar to the United State's supposed neutrality at the beginning of World War I with the US heavily supporting the British informally.

Randlett would take his personal days to chaperone the kids from his school on field trips. Randlett died of melanoma in 2015, but his legacy lives on. He donated his life savings to the Kentucky Child Victim’s Tryst Fund. Fund officials were inundated with tears as they were notified of Randlett’s $175,217.19 donation. The death of a 22-year-old African-American man shortly after a struggle with police last week has been ruled a homicide. An initial autopsy found significant traumatic injuries to the soft tissue of Robinson's neck, said Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich, who cautioned that the results from the autopsy, which was conducted Saturday, are preliminary and more tests need to be conducted. Cvitanovich said the findings are consistent with compressional asphyxia, which will likely be cause of death at the end of the process. The four detectives involved in the arrest were read their rights and have given statements, Lopinto said. They are being reassigned to administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation, the sheriff's said.

The young man should not have died. The people who are supposed to be "protecting our country" should not be the cause of lives being ended. their job is to keep people safe and they need to be taught to think before killing someone especially before the person has tried to harm them first.

This relates to the industrial revolution changing human impact on the environment. The manufacturing and prodution factories use a lot of resources and pollute our earth. I think this is absolutely crazy. It seems like everybody is just ignoring climate change and not doing anything about it. If we want to live in a world where we don’t have natural disaters every other day, we should at least try to help out?

Israeli forces killed 58 Palestinians at the boundary fence with Gaza on Monday, local health officials said, the most terrible shed of blood since the most violent days of Israel’s 2014 war in the territory.Tens of thousands of Palestinians had gathered midmorning. Many came to peacefully demonstrate, bringing their children and carrying flags. At a gathering point east of Gaza City, organizers urged protesters over loudspeakers to go through the fence, telling them Israeli soldiers were fleeing their positions, even as they were reinforcing them. Israeli snipers were not to allow a breach, and ambulances soon began coming from the fence as gunshots started No Israeli soldiers were injured though.

The U.S thinks they’re helping alot and cause alot of turmoil doing it and that’s sad that everything can’t just be peaceful.
