This article discusses a monumental moment in history for American-Cuban relations. A ban had been placed on citizens entering and leaving Cuba, which had prevented Cuban-Americans from returning to their homeland, as well as others from touring the country. Diplomatic relations had been restored by the efforts of Obama and Raul Castro (relative of Fidel Castro, who the original ban was enacted under).
This directly related to the relations that were shattered between the United States and Cuba during the Cold War, including the Bay of Pigs incident. Fidel Castro was not in favor of American imperialism, which proves that the problems between Cuba and America go back to the terms of the Spanish American War. Because the United States did not want to give Cuba full freedom of independence, their relations with Cuba were severed.
