Should We Worry About the Rio Olympics? (Bella Di Fazio 8th)

The preparation for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro is far from ready. The sewage in Guanabara Bay is disrupted the construction of the train lines to the venue. The Zika virus is very prevalent in this area leaving some people wearing "Zika proof" uniforms. The economy is in recession due to corruption and scandals and the crime rate is still very apparent. With ticket sales on a steady decrease and overall questionable treatment of human rights, is Rio really ready to host the Olympics?

There is usually widespread panic before the Olympics with all the construction and preparation, but I feel Rio may not be the best place to host the games this year, especially because of the Zika virus outbreak. This is similar to the Sochi Olympics because the tickets were too expensive for people to buy, there was illegal dumping of contaminated water, and anti-gay legislation.

  1. Too bad they already declared it and the torch is already there, but I would like to see things turn around by next month if possible because Brazil would be a good climate to have a summer olympics.
