Obama administration sues North Carolina over anti-LGBT law Jasmine Rodriguez Period 4

This article talks about the US Justice filing a lawsuit against North Carolina over its anti-LGBT law. The Justice deemed the law as state-sponsored discrimination. This law basically states that people are required to use public bathrooms that correspond to the gender on their birth certificate. It also does not recognize local laws that are set to protect the rights of gays and transgender people. North Carolina is facing an issue where the Justice is trying to nullify the law.

The issue of nullification first arose when it was proposed in the Kentucky Virginia Resolutions by Thomas Jefferson in response to the Alien Sedition Acts. The idea is that states were able to reject national laws they did not agree with. This posed issues within the government because the federal government was rid of the power to overrule the states. This article presents a similar issue, only this time, it is the federal government that is trying to nullify a state law.

  1. Matthew Homsher 9th- Is it possible for a justice to sue a state? I like the idea. I just don't know if it's legal.

  2. The Carolinas are always trying to do whatever they want instead of following laws.
