"Obama Administration Issues Guidance On Transgender Access to School Bathrooms" by Tea Perez 1st period

The Obama administration issued guidance Friday directing public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms matching their gender identity. A letter from the Departments of Education and Justice went to schools Friday with guidelines to ensure that "transgender students enjoy a supportive and nondiscriminatory school environment." The announcement comes with a debate over transgender rights in schools and public life, which includes a legal standoff between the administration and North Carolina over its controversial House Bill 2. The guidance goes beyond the bathroom issue, touching upon privacy rights, education records, and sex-segregated athletics, all but guaranteeing transgender students the right to identify in school as they choose.

The debate over the bathroom issue has recently surfaced through social media. I'm really glad our government has taken a step forward to help students and transgenders feel more comfortable in their schools. Our government is taking a step forward her the nondiscrimination towards transgenders.

  1. Yes the HB2 law stirred up a lot of controversy and I think it was just a dumb idea in the first place. It wasn't made because it could be useful they just wanted to make a political statement and it backfired. As for Obama's statement I agree with a lot of what he said. I also believe though there should be a focus on education and anti-bullying to make sure kids understand and make bullying people for gender identity a zero tolerance thing. Cause if kids can learn inclusiveness and acceptance earlier it can have a positive lasting impact on their actions.

  2. I am also really glad our government did something about this. Transgenders have been mistreated for so long and they deserve to be treated well considering they are basically just like everyone else in the world.

  3. I am glad as well that the government is deciding on reform. People should be able to use he restroom wherever they feel most comfortable. And the whole, "you have to go to the bathroom assigned to the gender on your birth certificate" doesn't even make sense; what, are we supposed to carry our birth certificates with us wherever we might want to pee as proof?
