Louisiana's 'Blue Lives Matter' Bill--Becca Brandt 4th Period

Louisiana recently set to approve a bill that would prevent hate crimes against the state's police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel. This decision was made because of the recent increase in tensions between those of the Black Lives Matter Movement and supporters of law enforcement. To pass, the bill just needs the signature of Governor John Bel Edwards, who plans to sign soon. When the bill is signed, it will make Louisiana the first state to have any such law. Once the bill passes, it will then state that it is unlawful to select the victim of the following offenses because of race, age, gender, religion, color, creed, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, or ancestry...or because of actual or perceived membership or service in, or employment with, an organization...as a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or emergency medical service personnel.

I do think this bill would be good for our protective services. It would lessen the tensions between the law enforcement and the Black Lives Matter Movement. Too many deaths have happened because of hate crimes lately, and that is not just a one way street. This will definitely help the law enforcement and I also believe it will stop the unnecessary shootings of criminals. A long time ago, in the early and mid 1900s, this would not have become an issue because blacks were minorities, however now that they are equal and have the right to speak out, I understand why the bill is necessary to stop tensions between the police and the black lives matter movement.

There are a lot of police officers out there who have been given a bad rap from officers involved in crimes. I hope this will give both sides of this situation protection.
