kenley turner 3rd period- Jail let mentally disabled man starve to death

summery: Mitchell, a mentally disabled man who went to jail for stealing an extremely small amount of candy died in jail due to them denying him meals and cutting the water off in his cell, as his cell was covered in fecal matter. Inmates tried to get help, but guards refused him help. Although mental hospitals tried to have Mitchell transferred, the jail would refuse. Multiple inmates chose to testify for Mitchell due to the conditions he was put in.

Analysis: This story is the equivalent of what a muckracker would write about during the gilded age. The story is rightfully biased, because of the awful conditions that Mitchell was put through, and is similar to what abusive mental patients had to encounter in the 1800's-1960's. I feel really bad for Mitchell and his family, because he really did nothing wrong. I honestly think that he stole soda, candy, and a twinky because he didn't know any better, and now he was being denied the help that he needed. Why? Because the security guards wanted to be jerks? I have no idea. But this is clearly an example of police brutality.

  2. I wonder why they thought it was okay to have a mentally disabled man in a regular jail, and to treat him so poorly at that. Prison reform as progressed, but this is proof there is still work to be done
