Teen girl Aniya Wolf wore a suit to her school's prom, an action that was met with extreme hostility from the school, which had earlier stated that all girls must wear formal dresses as part of the dress code. School officials threatened to call the police, and stated that no other case of a student being out of dress code had passed without punishment/removal from prom, meaning Aniya would be no different. Aniya ended up leaving the celebration.
Prom is about cherishing the youthful memories stemming from a high school experience, and feeling confident while doing so. It's 2016 and the fact that a girl was removed from prom just because she wanted to wear a suit instead of a dress is absurd for the modern times we live in. I see nothing wrong with Aniya's choice, as it was formal attire appropriate to the occasion. The school saying that no one else would get away with this and that the rule has been enforced for so long doesn't justify creating such a restrictive rule in the first place.
Flappers in the Roaring 20s are defined as fashionable young women flouting conventional beauty standards. This connects to Aniya's situation because both show confidence to wear whatever they feel comfortable in, while not being confined to what is deemed "appropriate" based on sex. Both experienced backlash from people with traditional, conservative views on gender roles.

I love your connection to flappers, because this action of the girl to expresses herself and defy the traditional roles of sexuality is a perfect example about how social standards are continuing to change for the better. Just like the flappers, the girl from your article took a risk to express herself and the modernistic ways of the time.

yes good connection to flappers! And I can't believe schools are still doing this kind of thing
ReplyDeleteOK so the staff gets mad if girls wear short dresses/skirts because it 'may distract male students' but if you wear a suit,(which covers your entire body!!!!),that's wrong too?(Alejandra Hernandez 6th period)
ReplyDeletethis is the 21st century!!! I can't believe that a school would take such harsh actions.
ReplyDeleteThis is ridiculous. People should be able to wear what make them feel good.

Completely ridiculous. She wasn't wearing the suit as an act of defiance or anything. It's almost like the school has a double standard.
ReplyDeleteI saw that and someone from her school commented on Zendaya's picture where she was wearing a pantsuit "the bishop will kick you out of prom for wearing that smh".
ReplyDeleteBut to be fair I think Aniya went to a catholic (or religious) school where the dress code is obviously going to be stricter because people on her twitter were talking about chapel and bishops.
