Coming for companies failing to report gender pay gap - Michal Randolph

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2018/mar/25/companies-could-face-court-over-gender-pay-gap-reporting

In Britain Companies are failing to report a gender pay gap in their tax returns. Doing so is against the Law and the Companies will be brought to court if they don’t comply with the Law. They are paying up to 30% more in regular pay and 40% more on promotions.

This can be connected with the womens rights in history. Women today are still not being treated with the same rights as men and it is a real issue that many people ignore. Women need to stand up and demand equal pay and rights.

Stephon Clark shooting aftermath- Noah Huerta

https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/30/us/sacramento-stephon-clark-autopsy/index.html

This article explains the autopsy of Stephon Clark and why many have found that the police statement
on the shooting, is completely false. What is known so far, is that Stephon Clark was shot, while police were looking for a suspect, and the police thought he had a weapon on him.

Why is this important to U.S. History?

I guess Police Accountability is always something to synthesize with American legislative flaws.
And not to mention the current, ongoing battle for tighter gun control laws in response to the increasing number of school shootings.

Adriann Wrice - Parklands Clear backpacks

https://www-m.cnn.com/2018/04/02/us/marjory-stoneman-douglas-clear-backpacks/index.html

Survivors of the Parkland school shooting returned from spring break with new security measures that made some feel like they were in prison. Many students think that the clear backpacks and ID badges are a constant eemeninder of what happened that day. Also some feel that with these new measures they are losing their sense of privacy. Some students have started protesting by putting a price tag on their backpack ultimately saying that the back pack is more valuable to their life.

I agree with the students. These measures are extreme. I think all the adults and administrators need to step back and think about if they lost 17% of their classmates or teachers when they were in high school then have to come back to school being treated like a prisoner. This is important to US history because it shows that kids are still fighting for stricter gun laws to protect them selves. This is like when people protested the law for voting age because they said if they are old enough to go to war for their country they wanted to vote and technically they were teenagers.

New Orleans Cheerleader Fired For "Unwanted Fraternization"- Victoria Gonzalez

Bailey Davis, an NFL cheerleader for the New Orleans Saints or a "Saintsation" was fired due to "anti-fraternisation policies between dancers and players and semi-nude photos posted on social media." On her private Instagram account, Bailey Davis posted a picture of her in a body suit that was considered "distasteful" and violated the rules of the Saintsations. Now I don't necessarily understand why that needed to be posted to begin with, but the fact of the matter is that the cheerleaders are required to follow rule such as:

  • If in a bar and a NFL player arrives before or after you, you must leave.
  • No eye contact is allowed between an NFL player.
  • You cannot follow or like any NFL player's social media account.
  • You cannot attend a party with an NFL player.
Some of the many odd rules required to "protect the cheerleaders from the players" while meanwhile the players have no rules against them being sleazy or inappropriate. Davis talks about how the issue is discriminatory to women and I agree, these girls have to bend over backwards in order to avoid being harassed when in reality the NFL players should have rules against harassing women to begin with.

6 Years After Attack Malala Yousafzai Returns to Pakistan

Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai is a feminist icon and UN speaker for speaking of the importance of girl's education especially in countries such as Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel. This has been difficult since the early 2000's due to the Taliban's arrival and interference with Pakistan and blew up all girl's schools and also made it illegal for girls to be educated. She is famous for speaking at the UN but her story began when she and her father worked with British and Canadian publicists to anonymously discuss girl's inequalities under the Taliban's rule along with publicly speak and encourage girls to become as educated as possible. She was later shot by a Taliban leader but miraculously survived, she remained in London for the next six years as hadn't been back home since. However, recently she had the opportunity to go home back to Pakistan and she was overjoyed as she saw home for the first time in nearly six years.

Bill Cosby Trial Reemerges-Victoria Gonzalez

Bill Cosby was a beloved and aspired comedian in the eighties and the nineties, however, in the course of last year things have changed due to five women coming out and admitting that he drugged and raped them when they went to visit to talk about business matters or work. His trial has been put off but it now looming and the odds are not in Cosby's favor. Legal experts predict ten years for eighty-year-old Cosby, for the actor ten years in prison could mean the rest of his life behind bars. The difference in this investigation is mostly attorneys and bias. If we're going to start on attorneys, I say this meaning that Cosby has now hired the same attorney who helped Michael Jackson and Mike Tyson avoid child molestation and domestic violence charges. However, bias comes into play because within the past year the #MeToo movement has dramatically increased meaning society and most likely, the jury, is more open to listening to the women and their stories. I believe he did it, as much as I wish it wasn't true it's unavoidable to acknowledge the fact that all women have the exact same stories about his behavior and how he targeted them. If the verdict or evidence proves his guilt, I won't be surprised.

NRA Board Member Verbally Attacks Parkland Survivors- Victoria Gonzalez

The NRA and the survivors of the Parkland Florida school shooting have been seen going head to head in downhill meetings, Congress legislations and the media. The ultimate goal is to keep gun control out of the hands of public (according to the NRA) while the survivors and majority of the Democratic party is focusing on keeping guns out of the hands of the public. The survivors have made efforts by talking to Congressman and state legislators, starting rallies, organizing marches, and publicly campaigning against gun violence. The NRA has concluded to advertisements, smear campaigns, and bullying these brave young men and women by having one of their board members saying , "All you have to do now is not only feel sorry for the liars, but you have to go against them and pray to God that the lies can be crushed and the liars can be silenced so that real measures can be put into place to actually save children's lives. These poor children, I'm afraid to say this and it hurts me to say this, but the evidence is irrefutable, they have no soul," I understand people saying there's a need for 2nd amendment rights, I agree, however, gun control does not mean taking away everyone's guns. It means getting rid of the ones we use in a time of war-ones we don't need for gun ranges or even hunting. Also, statements like this only prove that the NRA is so desperate to keep their image and maintain their guns that they've resulted into verbally abusing these survivors-t's disgraceful and disgusting considering they have seen their friends massacred first hand.
