Harriet Tubman on the 20$ Bill?

Jacob McMakin     https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/2019/05/22/harriet-tubman-20-bill-no-longer-coming-in-2020.html

Got any cash, take a look, kind of looks all the same, doesn’t it?  That’s because only a select gender and ethnicity is represented on the currency of a country who calls its self a “melting pot”. In 2016 it was proposed that the 20$ should be replaced with a more fitting and deserving figure, other than the alcoholic, Andrew Jackson.  Tubman seemed fitting, and after thousands of requests by people in power and the public, it was decided that she would be represented.  The original printing date was supposed to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote.  Just recently it has been announced by Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, that the date has been pushed back 8 years due to lack of enthusiasm by President Trump.  Trump quotes on this matter calling it “pure political correctness”, of corse to be taken not by women and people of color as anything to do with “political correctness, but yet equal representation.  Throughout American history women, especially of color, have been pushed quite literally to the back.  Even after the civil rights movement of the 50’s and 60’s, rights have been granted, but equality has not.

What Students Are Saying About: Online Learning, Family Vacations, and Moving To A New Home- Hannah Rodriguez

An online education program in Silicon valley shared there favorite family vacations and gave an idea of what it was like to move into a new home. Because of this writers are going to read writing prompts, something that the writers have told the teens to do.
Writers are interested not in what the teenagers pick to read, but more about what made what they read so interesting.

SISTER JAMES CANCELLED??

kristen ramirez

If you haven't heard, Youtube Makeup Guru James Charles has been cancelled and has lost 3 million subscribers. Why?? Well, Ex best friend Tati exposed James in a recent video titled "Goodbye Sister' by revealing some of his dirty secrets due to him partnering with Sugar bear. Sugar bear is Halo's ( Tati's brand) biggest competitor, In the video, Tati mentions the way James has forced himself towards straight men, him being manipulative, immature and not knowing how to "grow up."

This may be a late blog post about this topic because at this point everyone knows the Tati drama. After the first video posted by Tati, James than released an apology video. It doesn't stop there, Tati posted another video shortly titled "Why I did it" basically stating her reasons for the first video. Following, James released a video titled " The Truth" were he mentions the actual "truth" due to Tati lying and showing receipts. In the video, he mentions beauty guru Jeffery Star who then makes a video clearing some things and apologizing due to some things he said online. The whole situation is very confusing and has been dropped. James, Tati and Jeffery are all ready to let it go and start creating some content. ( Tati since than has deleted the first video)

Should Congress Try To Impeach President Trump?- Hannah Rodriguez

During the 2016 election of President Donald Trump, there was an investigation of his interference with Russia. Due to further investigation Democratic officials want impeach President Trump. Impeachment is calling into question the integrity or validity of something. For example, impeachment is the process by in which a legislative body charges a government official. This does not result in removal of office, but charges to an indictment in criminal law.

Supreme Court's Decision on Census Could Altger American Politics- Hannah Rodriguez

The United States Census is a head count taken every ten years of all the people living in the United States. The data from the census determine many federal and state decisions, but one of the most important is how many seats in congress will be assigned to the states. Arguments about the next census ask if they will be mainly American citizens. Would having non-citizens of the united states being counted be a problem for the country?

Adversity in College Applications

     Jacob McMakin.      https://www.insidehighered.com/admissions/article/2019/05/20/college-board-will-add-adversity-score-everyone-taking-sat

Everyone faces different struggles in life, and how a child has grown up can drastically change the way they learn.  A new SAT Adversity index has already been used in 50 colleges around the country, and by 2020, SAT is hoping for a full sweep of America.  The index will take into account the wealth, crime rate, and other socioeconomic factors of the child’s high school.  More personal factors will also be taken into account, such as 1/2 parent household, death of a guardian, traumatic events, median family income, and other factors.  The score will be determined out of 100 with a formula, and taken into account for the SAT score.
Advocates hope this will replace the already used Affirmative Action standards which has been criticized for using “racial quotas” in school.  Some say it will give collages a broader sense of a child’s potential, and help not affect the already affluent children apart of the American Bourgeois.    This has already helped expose the overwhelming amount of black and latinx student who score significantly higher on the index than those of Anglo decent.  Due to years of systematic oppression, even after desegregation.  De Facto segregation still is in place today, with many smart kids not able to receive the equal opportunities as others of different economic, or domestic backgrounds.

Sex Education- Hannah Rodriguez

Sex Education has been being taught in schools for decades. Sex Education is the instruction of issues relating to sexuality, including emotionally and physically, It is to have knowledge of the responsibilities, the sexual anatomy, sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse, etc. In a Colorado public school, a student stated that his teachers example of sex was repeatedly rolling tape until it lost its stickiness. The student shared the lesson he had been taught by saying,“People are like tape and once they have sex they’re dirty and can’t have meaningful relationships." Because of this Colorado passed a Sex Education Bill.
The bill updates a 2013 comprehensive sex education law in three significant ways:
  • It adds a requirement that Colorado public schools teach kids about consent.
  • It removes a waiver for charter schools to opt of the state’s sex ed requirements.
  • It funds a grant program for schools that want to teach sex ed but lack the resources to
The bill got its first hearing in the House Health and Insurance Committee on Jan. 0 and by Feb. 29 it was on its way to senate.

The Chick-Fil-A bill -Paola Aceves

A new bill in texas is being proposed called, known by supporters as the “Save Chick-Fil-A Bill”. The bill itself is said to support religious freedom, but LGBTQ advocates believe it could be used for anti LGBT actions. The bill was proposed as a response to San Antonio’s city council banning Chick-Fil-A from their airport due to the history of supporting anti-LGBT organizations. The bill is aiming to block government entities from taking action against individuals or businesses based on their religious affiliation.

While this does sound good in theory, it could also harm the LGBT community because of religious views on homosexuality. The LGBT community has been fighting for rights for a very long time and should not get those rights taken away.

Baltimore held hostage- Sophie Knox

https://roguerocket.com/2019/05/22/baltimore-held-hostage-in-ransomware-attack/

Summary: All throughout Baltimore, government servers have been used for hostage for over two weeks. Hackers breached about 10,000 government computers in exchange for 13 bitcoins ($100,000). They even threatened to hack more data if the city didn’t pay. The deadline has passed and Baltimore still hasn’t paid. Fortunately Emergency services like 911 hasn’t been impacted. The hackers used a ransomware called RobbinHood  which blocks access to servers. There is a digital key to unlock it and if they get their money, they will give Baltimore the Key.

Analysis: Our world has become really crazy. I believe in the future as we become more digital, problems like this will become more problem. On the brighter side of things, it’s not as deadly as a real hostage situation, but it is still very bad. Thankfully 911 still works cause otherwise the city would be a disaster. The purpose of this article was solely to bring attention to this massive issue and the audience was to the general public. I can relate this to WW2. After Hitler broke his promise, the allies began to say “No negotiating with terrorists” and like that quote, Baltimore isn’t negotiating with them.

Bleach promoted as Miracle drug- Sophie Knox

https://roguerocket.com/2019/05/22/bleach-promoted-as-miracle-treatment-for-diseases-on-youtube/

Summary: Over the past few years Jim Humble has promotes Chlorine dioxide (also known a bleach) as a miracle drug that can treat almost every disease including cancer, hiv, and autism. He was a former scientist until he formed his own church that promoted alternative medicine. Humble calls it a “Miracle Mineral Solution” and claims he stumbled upon it in South America in 1996. He claims it is a oxidizer and kills pathogens/poison; however the FDA says that the chlorine can’t treat these diseases. To help spread his message, He posted on Facebook and YouTube. Various parent tried this method and witnessed harmful side affects. Many experts believe that this is actually lethal.

Analysis: It is crazy to see what people are willing to try. Firstly, He was a scientist and he should know better than promoting a harmful substance. Although it’s freedom of religion, he’s hurting people through his beliefs. The audience for this article was pretty much everyone I order to help raise awareness to this awful “miracle drug”. The point of view of this article is someone who is ant-chlorine doxide. I can synthesize this to U. S history, because doctors used to think that if a person was sick, they had bad blood and to get rid of that bad blood you needed to bleed. Both this story and that story show incorrect science.

Teacher yearbook photos spark controversy- Paige Bowman

At San Pasqual High School in Escondido California, multiple teachers sparked national controversy after posing in mustaches and sombreros to depict Spanish speaking people. While some parents took it to the offense, some were indifferent. The teachers released a statement apologizing and saying that they welcome all types of students and they will think more carefully in the future.

Arizona prisons ban book about the criminal justice system and black men- Paige Bowman

In Arizona prisons, a certain book isn't very welcome. "Chokehold: Policing Black Men" was written by Georgetown law professor and federal prosecutor Paul Butler. It talks about the connection between the justice system and black men. The Arizona Department of Corrections banned the book, and although it is allowed to prevent incarcerated people to read any book of their choosing, many are calling it unconstitutional. It's being considered that way because it's against the First Amendment to censor a book that would help incarcerated inmates understand how legal, penal, and other institutions shape their lives. Arizona is being called to put the book back on the shelves, as well as other books they've banned other the years.

Iran Update- Clay Seifert

In its strive to cajole Iran into cooperation/elimination/submission, the Trump administration has in the last several weeks applied a TON of force. We blocked the country’s last avenues for selling oil, classified the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a terrorist organization and deployed ships and bombers to the Persian Gulf. However, despite all the new pressure, we’ve recently had no victories or effect on the current state of things. It has only turned Iran’s current state regarding possible negotiations from patience to confrontation. An P. Trump isn’t helping the matter at all, tweeting out attacks on Iran, eventually provoking a response from Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who shot back, “Try respect. It works.”

Also, doesn’t this remind you of some events going on in the early 70s? Crazy.

Nancy Pelosi and Impeachment Talks: a regular day @ the white house - Clay Seifert

Nancy Pelosi went to the White House on Wednesday knowing full well that a planned presidential ambush awaited. Prez Trump was not “serious,” and needed a way out of negotiations over a $2 trillion infrastructure plan that he could not pay for. However, P. Trump’s going off in the white house garden earlier led to a played down topic: impeachment. The only thing proven by Trump’s outburst is that he is willing to sacrifice his legit policy-based agenda to keep “presidential harrassement” in the spotlight. However, talk of a legitimate impeachment is VERY real, as Pelosi stated “We do believe that it’s important to follow the facts. We believe that no one is above the law, including the president of the United States, and we believe that the president of the United States is engaged in a cover-up.” The cover-up quip is what caused P. Trump to explode.

Honest President Trump - Clay Seifert

President Trump abruptly blew up a meeting with Democratic congressinal leaders on Wednesday, dramatically stating that he could NOT work with them until they stopped investigating him and then lashed out at Nancy Pelosi for accusing him of a cover-up. He then marched out into the Rose Garden, where reporters had been just chilling, and stated (clearly shaking (metaphorically) with anger) as he demanded that Democrats “get these phony investigations over with.” This outburst happened on a day where democrats were talking about a possible impeachment, and all of them pressed Pelosi into (possibly(?)) opening a formal inquiry regarding whether Prez Trump should be removed from office or not. He also said that he was “the most transparent president in the history of the United States.” I started cackling when I watched him say that.

Scott's Tots 2.0?? - Clay Seifert

Last week, a billionaire pledged to pay for all the tuitions of students at Moorehouse University. The grant was completely unexpected and kind of out of the blue, as the campus president did not even knowit was coming. However, this issue poses numerous numbers of issues and prompts a ton of logistical difficulties. How will the grants work? What students will be eligible? And students who had to leave due to fiscal difficulties will NOT have their debts paid for, prompting some guilty feelings for some graduates.

Honestly, I just thought this reminded me of Scott’s Tots. We shall soon see whether he pulls a Michael Scott or whether this dream will become a reality.

Trump Tax Returns to be Released. (Probably) - Clay Seifert

New York lawmakers gave their final approval to a bill that would make it extremely possible for Congress to obtain President Trump’s state tax returns, creating another element in the general kerfuffle regarding the president’s refusal to release his taxes. The bill taht will go into place will (tentatively probably) be signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a third-term Democrat and regular cynicist of Prez Trump’s behavior and policies. It will authorize state tax officials to release the president’s state returns to any one of the three congressional committees. Prez Trump said that he is willing to take the fight over his federal tax returns to the Supreme Court, and it seems likely that he actually would honestly based on the current/past state of things and the tensions regarding this.

Michael Avenatti - Clay Seifert

A federal grand jury in Manhattan indicted celebrity attorney Michael Avenatti, charging him with fraud and aggravated identity theft. One is from former client Stormy Daniels, and the other is due to attempting to extort more than $20 million from Nike. Avenatti was charged with with stealing about $300,000 from Stormy from the advance for her book contract, and using that money to pay employees of his law firm and an coffee business he owned. Apparently he has paid back less than half of the money he owe(s/d) her. And the Nike thing has to do with Avenatti extorting employees due to alleged misconduct  on the eve of both the company's quarterly earnings call and the start of the NCAA tournament. Prosecutors in Los Angeles charged him with wire and bank fraud, and he has since been indicted on 36 DIFFERENT counts in that case.

Oregon State Student Dies From Falling During a Selfie- Paige Bowman

On Sunday, a student from Oregon State died after falling approximately 100 feet. 21-year-old Michelle Casey was seriously injured when she slipped and fell while taking pictures Neahkahnie Mountain, near Highway 101. Caseys boyfriend says she landed in a tree, which prevented her from falling into the Pacific Ocean. paramedics arrived on the scene at 10:51 AM. It took two hours to remove her from the tree. She was then flown to a Portland hospital, where she passed due to the injuries sustained during her fall. She had chosen to be an organ donor, and that choice saved two lives. She was studying kinesiology, and will always be known by her friends and family as a hero for donating her organs.

Legalization of human compost- Paige Bowman

In the US, history has been made. Washington became the first state to legalize using dead bodies as compost. The bill was passed earlier this week by bill sponsor Sen. Jamie Pederson, who refers to it as an "environmentally friendly way of disposing of human remains. How it works is that they cover a body in wood chips or straw, and it helps accelerate the process using microbial activity. After about 5-7 weeks, the family receives the soil, and from there its up to the family how it should be used. it's also a cheaper option, cutting the burial bill from around $10,000 to $5,500. I think that in the future, this is going to be a very big alternative because its healthy for the planet.

Elle Grinnell- queen learns how to use self-service checkout

queen Elizabeth took part in sainsburys 150th birthday celebration and learned about the self service checkouts. staff showed her how to use it so she didn't have to go about the task herself. the queen had some laughs and giggles asking if it was a even possible to cheat the machine. during her visit she met the two original founders of the store.
I personally think its crazy to think about the fact that the queen had to learn how to use the self service. many of us use these as a quicker alternative without even thinking of it since we were young.

Elle Grinnell- Ryanair passenger rails against cabin crew after landing in wrong Italian city

An Italian man was very angry when his flight landed in the city of Bari instead of the island on Sardinia. the man class it was the crews job to stop him from boarding the wrong place to his incorrect destination at  the gate. the man said he only noticed that he was on the wrong flight when they started landing in the city of Bari. its very unclear how this incident happened but it is most likely the passengers fault.
I see how this could be a big deal since the man claims he has no more money to buy a ticket to his correct destination. but also as boarding it is the crews job to check the tickets. also, before you take off the pilot usually announces where the flight is departing to and at that point he should've checked his ticked or listened to the announcement to make sure it was headed for the correct location.

Elle Grinnell- more than 250 people around the world have died taking selfies since 2011

around 259 people have died worldwide by taking selfies which is shown by a study that was published in the journal of family medicine and primary care. The found that most of the incidents occur in India then Russia, the United States, and Pakistan and most of these victims were men under the age of 30 years old. drowning is one of the major causes of selfie deaths because people are often washed away by a wave or fall of a boat. In the us the biggest cause of selfie deaths is using a firearm such as posing with a gun.
honestly, I feel like some of these things are just common sense and stupidity such as posing with a gun or standing on a really tall building. others are truly just accidents with people just trying to get a photo. overall, people are way too absorbed in their phone and need to start living in the moment a but more.

Elle Grinnell- infant died after being left inside day care van in Florida

a child who was only a few months old died within a day care van on Wednesday in Florida. the information that was found shows she was in the van from 8 am to around 1 pm the the call was made. temperatures were as high as 92 degrees when she was left in the car.  the van picks up children in the morning and its the workers job to make sure that he/she takes out all the children. the center cares for around 14 children and non of the others were injured. around 38 children die each year from the cause of being left in a hot car. `
this reminds me of a few years ago when children dying from being left in a hot car used to be a large deal during one summer.

Six dead, 200 injured in protests over Indonesia's election result -Mathew Hille

https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/22/asia/indonesia-protests-election-intl/index.html

Six people were killed as well as close to 200 more in a protest in indonesia concerning to the recent election results. President Joko Widodo was elected recently with a 56% popular vote and all because of this election result there were these protests that ended up in death. The outrage from this election started with people in streets pelting rocks at police and their cars as well as setting the cars in flames. The Indonesian anti-riot came to the streets in attempts to stop the overnight violent riot.

Elle Grinnell- previously unreported sixth migrant child died in U.S. custody last year

An El Salvadoran girl, the age of ten years old, with past heart defects died in the custody of the United States last year without being reported. this now brings it up to six children of those that have crossed the border within the last eight months that have died. a spokesman for the department of health and human services told the press that this child died of fever and respiratory distress in September. no other information was shared but her as well as the five other minors that are known to have passed while in custody of the United States are all from Guatemala.
I think we can relate this to the abortion situation thats going on right now. Men in the senate are so worried about things being "killed" that doesn't even have a heartbeat. yet, this information is being disclosed without people even knowing and the same people who are making abortions illegal dont seem to care.

Impeachment Talk Throws Trump Into Tailspin- Paige Bowman

Although it's only been rumors, talk about the impeachment of the president by Democrats send President Trump into a fit. On Thursday, Trump stormed out of a meeting with council members and refused to continue until lawmakers stopped investigating him. He refused to talk to a House Speaker and a Senate Democratic Leader. The allegations towards Trump have been steadily increasing, and he has been getting more and more heat since the Mueller Report came out recently. During the display, people could describe him as having a tantrum. He refused to even say the word "impeachment", rather calling it "the I word.", House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said he was "disappointed in Trump" after missing an opportunity to pass legislation that would give greatly needed funding to fix the nations crumbling roads and bridges. Earlier that day, Pelosi accused Trump of a "cover-up" a phrase that is connected to Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal. Her, as well as many Democrats, are worried for ourselves, and our country.

Almost 5,000 people were evacuated from their homes in attempts to escape a enormous wildfire. This monstrous fire burned nearly 250,000 acres of land that residents occupied, luckily this wildfire didn't reach the city. The circumstances of the weather were not in favor of the firefighters and made it difficult for them to tame and stop the spreading of this fire. Emergency alerts were sent out the residents in the surrounding area at first in a warning but then became a mandatory evacuation.

After many decades the law was revisited and decided that the weapon was unusual and dangerous. Others replied with counter arguments that practically anything could be classified as a "weapon" even something as small as a watted up newspaper. Even though there were mixed opinions concerning this "weapon" the ban ended up getting passed.

Queen Learns to Use Self-Checkout Paige Bowman

In the news today, a moment like no other has happened. Queen Elizabeth, the ruler of England, learned to use self-checkout for the very first time today. The Queen, who is 93 years young, visited Sainsbury's earlier today.  Today is Sainsburys 150th birthday, and to commemorate it, she decided to not only grab the handles of her shopping cart, but the hearts of her subjects. And even though she didn't use the self-checkout herself, Sainsbury staff was more than happy to demonstrate how it worked. This was a special Sainsbury, a 1860s replica that the Queen got an all-access tour too. Exposed brick, old-timey things, the whole 9 yards.

Alabama abortion-ryian Johnson

Alabama passed a state law where abortion is illegal and there are consequences if you break it. Personally, I think this violates the church and state separation. If you don’t like it you should simply ignore it. The government should not have regulation over a woman’s body. It is her decision on what to do with her body

Abortion Sally north

New laws in many states have made abortion illegal, and doctors can be sentenced to up to 99 years in jail for performing one, which is longer than what a rapist could be sentenced to.

This decision takes away a womans bodily autonomy, and we need to put more effort into separating church and state as many opponents of abortion are religious conservatives.

Abortions Becoming Illegal - Marianita Montalvo

Recently I'm pretty sure everybody has seen how abortions have became illegal in the state of Alabama. This has caused so much counter argument with a lot of people whether they think, it is right or not to make abortions illegal or not. in my personal opinion i don't  think a group of male representatives should be making the decision of what a women should be able to do with her body. its getting worse by the minute because in my opinion other states are building off of this decision made with other things such as making birth control illegal, saying that during sexual intercourse once you give consent you cannot withdrawal your consent. these laws were made back when the Roe v Wade supreme court decision was being made and other revolutionary women movements during the time. To me this seems like a clear example that we as people are backtracking, its 2019 and every year is suppose to be about growth and this isn't growth. This also sounds like related event that happened before in our history when the united states has had prohibition, when alcohol was illegal and not to much later they made an amendment to bring it back. Most likely because it beneficial for them, the men,but abortions are not they are just "unnatural' and "gods choice."

Abortion

Caden Dickinson

There are new laws in certain states have made abortions illegal, and women can now be put to death for it and doctors can be given 99 years in prison for preforming abortions. I personally think it is a very poor to choice to make abortion illegal because of people want abortions they will find a way to have one which can lead to unsafe and unsupervised abortions. The decision was also made by males and it isn’t a mans place to choose what a women does with her body.

Dallas police investigate "similarities" in crimes against 3 transgender women- Maya Friedmann

Dallas police are investigating whether or not the death of a transgender woman could be connected to the death of another murder and assault in which both victims were transgender women. Dallas police major VIncent Weddington states that the deaths and assault have similarities but that there is not definitive links between them. All three victims of these crimes were in the same intersection in East Dallas prior to the crime. Police are still trying to find out who did it and the motive.
The crimes against these women were most likely out of hate, and I am ashamed that something like that would happen in Dallas. These events show how hard it really is for transgender women, and how much hate they face everyday. Things have definitely been getting better for the LGBT community, but things like this should never happen.

Transgender woman dies after being a victim of mob attack-Anna Speer

On April 12th Muhlaysia Booker was attacked by a group of men who punched and stomped on Booker after she was involved in a minor accident in the parking lot of an east Oak Cliff apartment complex. Not only was the attack captured on video, but her attackers yelled homophobic slurs during the beating, leaving her with a broken wrist and concussion. While other attackers weren't found Edward Thomas was arrested two days after the attack. Weeks after the beating, Booker was fatally shot and killed. Regarding her attacker, Edward Thomas, he was charged with aggravated assault in the attack because gender identity is not covered under Texas’s hate crime statute.
Thomas had been released from the Dallas County jail before Saturday. At this time, the department does not know where he is. The state of Texas should take more charge to support the LGBTQ community because this is only one of many fatal attacks. They deserve justice and to be treated like any other civilian. When will the violence end?

Ariana Oliver- China's Minority Identification

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/14/technology/china-surveillance-artificial-intelligence-racial-profiling.html

China has been criticized internationally for having held the Muslim ethnicity of its Western regions in detention camps similar to the ones used for the Japanese during World War II. However, new documents reveal how the government is using facial recognition technology to monitor a minority of their country, the Uighurs, Muslims, of a Turkish ancestry living mostly in the Xinjiang region. Authorities call it "minority identification" which many admit is just a euphemism. According to China, they are profiling the Uighurs for "law enforcement purposes", since the Chinese government classifies them as a "sensitive group of people". CloudWalk is one of the companies behind the technology. SenseTime, another company working on the technology said it was not aware of the profiling, while Megvii said it was creating the program to help in the well-being and safety of individual citizens. The police have put together lists in order to have the facial recognition programs help catch criminals. These include lists of people with mental illnesses, criminal records, past drug usage, or those who had petitioned for the government to change. China is able to do this since their leaders care less about moral consensus of their citizens. Ethnic profiling is commonplace in China, while in other places it would be seen as a morally wrong. The companies behind the technology are pushing to expand this technology overseas, which could put this in the hands of other countries. Experts such as Jonathan Frankle believes this technology could become an "existential threat to democracy."

This type of technology could be connected to the idea of nativism in America early on, and the pushback against foreigners entering America, but China is citing reasons of ethnic violence and terrorist attacks while America's nativism ideals were based on fears of the foreigners taking American jobs. For instance, Ellis Island and Angel Island being used to screen all incoming immigrants can be similar to how China is profiling a certain minority for fears of danger. What China is doing also is similar to the Soviet for authoritarian rule of their country. They are using data to enforce rules and regulations in ways that were previously impossible.

Ariana Oliver- Texting While Walking Illegal

https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/20/us/new-york-walking-while-texting-trnd/index.html
This article was written by CNN author, Augusta Anthony and published on May 21, 2019. In New York, pedestrians could be fined for using their mobile devices while walking. It has been said that people may be less likely to notice a honking cab or someone on a bike if they're on their phone. With exceptions to emergencies, it will be illegal to text, check emails and use the internet. In a statement to CNN, Kennedy has stated that he doesn't support the concept. He feels as though the bill is an overreach of the government.

I agree with Kennedy with his statement because the government is violating parts of our freedom, and with the numerous amount of people that walk in NYC, it would be hard to fine someone who's seen walking and texting in the crowded areas.

Supporters of this law says laws against distracted walking are needed to protect pedestrians, especially in high traffic areas. Others say that distracted drivers are the problem not pedestrians.
Researchers say we can't be on our phones and still see our surrounding environment with our peripheral vision so just use common sense and resist the urge to look at your phone or if you really can't wait, at least stop and move to a safe spot because there been 11,000 injuries reported in the U.S, from 2000 to 2011. Plus, the government should be thinking about major world problems such as terrorism and global warming and not minor, useless laws such as this.

Walmart will now raise its prices - Siobhan Crummey

https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/16/business/walmart-earnings-stock-tariffs-trump-china/index.html

Because of the new tariffs that Trump placed on goods from China, Walmart has been forced to raise its prices. This is not only a reflection of the growing tensions with China, but also the result of poor communications. Walmart has been a staple of low-priced food, clothes, and pretty much anything else for families across the country. The historical context relates to the Intolerable Acts at the time of Americas pre-revolutionary period. The audience is anyone who used to shop at Walmart, or anyone who still maybe does. The point of view is Nathaniel Meyersohn, and honestly I don't even know who that is, but I bet he's shopped at Walmart before. The purpose is to inform, and the importance is immeasurable, because the bad relationship with China has bled into daily life for every American.

New York might make it illegal to text while walking - Joziah German

In New York City, pedestrians could be fined for looking down at their phones while crossing the road. Especially in a busy city, crossing the street in Manhattan is challenging at all hours of the day. Now it could be illegal to look at a mobile device. A bill in the NY state Senate seeks to ban the use of devices crossing the street with fines ranging from $25 to $250 dollars.  The only exception would be for emergencies on this statewide ban. The bill was first introduced a year ago, but last week, State senator John Liu developed a new push for getting this issue forward. He wants New Yorkers to know its O.K. to wait the five seconds. There have been some doubts by the transportation committees, which might stall its ability to become a full vote. Some think this is an overreach of the government. Honolulu has passed a similar law in 2017, sparking some of New York passion to have this bill passed. Also, the number of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes has gotten above 6,000 people. Most of these fatalities occur after dark with alcohol consumption. Although not official, the bill to ban cell phone usage on crossways of streets is making its way through New York State's government.

This article published by Augusta Anthony, CNN, was created just a week after New York began to question it's wanting of this bill. I had no prior knowledge about the ability to charge pedestrians for looking at their technology while crossing streets. I personally think that this bill is way far, especially with the world we have created embedded with technology. Mention, most of the casualties described from traffic crashes was at night with alcohol consumption, not the cellphones doing the damage. This article brings me back to the law that is making its way nationwide, obligating states to comply. No texting while driving is a fairly new law, but its making progress with its backing of data. Most of all car crashes on the road are in the result of someone being distracted on their phones. Both the new bill and this law have to do with the use of cell phones and people being distracted by them. I think that if this New York bill gains traction, it could become a law that is spread nationwide. This article was written for mostly New York residents who are now learning that they can't be on their phones crossing streets. This article, I think, was created to let citizens know of this new bill being processed in their states government. There is importants with this article because the new bill could help save many lives from being taken by distraction others. I am not sure which way this bill could go, but I am hoping that whatever the assembly decides, its in the best of the New York people.

Many states pushing for new abortion bills- paola aceves

The most commonly noticed state for recent push of anti-abortion bills has been Alabama. Alabama has passed a bill that calls for doctors performing abortions to be treated as felons potentially serving the same or more time than rapists themselves. Mississippi passed a heartbeat bill, so has Ohio.Georgia, Kentucky, Arkansa, Utah and Iowa have all also passed similar bills. Other states have been pushing to pass bills as well.

For all of history, women have been pushing for rights, some of those rights being reproductive rights. Women have gone to prison for fighting for reproductive rights and it wasn’t until Roe V. Wade that women did get more reproductive rights. These bills could potentially retract those rights.

Tx/Ok Floods and Tornados - Chloe Meinershagen

https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/20/us/severe-weather-monday-wxc/index.html

Today alone there have been 14 confirmed tornados total in Oklahoma and West Texas, that carry with them fears of flash flooding and danger. More than 50 Million people are at risk of some sort of harm. Most threats include high winds up to 75 mph, large hail, and a possible tornado. There has already been some damage, over 2,000 power outages, multiple trees damaged, etc. In 2013, in this same region, a devastating tornado ended up taking 24 lives with it. There is fear a bad one could strike, as there have been over 50 tornado reports in just three days.

This article is so incredibly important because we, as Booker T. Students, live just on the cusp of the danger. Luckily we are more towards the outer shell of the region of damage, yet if the region moves more south east we could be in serious harm. This is shocking since I was aware of small amounts of flash flooding and tornados near my house, but I didn't realize the magnitude of the damage. I can compare this article to the Dust Bowl, which affected Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, etc. This region of the Great Plains underwent huge amounts of dust and wind because of a drought in 1930 and over cropping in the soil. While I'm not sure if that is the cause of the current problems in this region, it does seem that the great plains is under going more natural disasters, which hopefully do not get as bad or as long as the Dust Bowl. I hope everyone in harm's way stays safe!

Same Sex marriage in Taiwan - Angelia Perez

Same-sex marriage will become legal on May 29,2019. But Taiwan in furious after China tried to take credit for the LGTBQ+  win. This is the first place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. LGTBQ activists are overflowing with joying for this bill to be passed.  Before they defined same-sex marriage as unconstitutional and the historic vote in Taiwan came almost two years after the islands constitutional court ruled existing laws.

Good for Taiwan for making history in China.

"Did Anti-Abortion Activists Overreach in Alabama" -- Youssef Bakr

Firstly, I would like to commend the author on the appropriate capitalization of the title of the article: it is actually done correctly, which is a rarity these days.

A main concern of Republicans in response to the recently passed Alabama anti-abortion bill is that of strategical fallacy. Even the most pro-life activists point out that the full-sway nature of the bill pushes moderates over to the pro-choice side of the issue. If the bill were to go to the Supreme Court, it is easy to see Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh siding with the liberals. Critics point out that it is far better to ease into a state of a complete lack of abortion  - pushing the legal latest abortions more and more weeks farther back - because moderates are able to follow along, rather than react negatively to such a sudden change.

An equivalency can be drawn back to the Civil War, when activists such as William Lloyd Garrison and John Brown sought immediate change, while others, such as Abraham Lincoln, pushed for gradual abolition. It was not because Lincoln was any less anti-slavery than the other men, but he saw strategic value in gradual and effectual change.

Four people Killed in Catholic Parade - Angelia Perez

Gunmen killed four Catholics in a religious procession in northern Burkina Faso a day after a priest and five parishioners were murdered at mass, church officials say. The parade with a statue of the Virgin Mary was moving around the town on Monday when a group of terrorists intercepted the procession killing four worshipers and burning the statue. They let the minors or children go before they executed four adults and burned the statue.

This is sad I have no words. This is like the bombing at an Easter service with Christians. My thoughts and prayers are with the innocent that were killed.

Lesly Marquez- what its like to try to get an abortion in Mississippi

Summary:

In this article a woman named Amanda Furdge informs us about her two different experiences in two different places. Amanda tells us that when she moved to Chicago in 2007 after moving from Jackson  and had two unplanned pregnancies she expected the same terminating process as in her hometown Jackson. Jackson was a a place in which women were forced to keep their children and were constantly being chased by people who would try to convince these women of not terminating there pregnancies but Chicago was different. In Chicago women had the option of what to do with their bodies. They would choose to abort  their soon to be children or choose not too.Amanda also informs us that she was never really given any sex education from her hometown. They avoided the topic or maid lies up but never taught women anything about their bodies or just sex in general. Amanda also tells us that in the state of Mississippi there was only one actual abortion clinic and you could just walk in anytime you had to have an appointment 24 hours ahead and met certain requirements meaning she didn't have a choice to an abortion or not because Mississippi didn't really have abortion clinics.

Analysis:

In my opinion I believe any woman should have the right to  decide what she wants to do with her body. If a woman wants to abort she should get the opportunity to do that but if a woman  doesn't want to abort that's totally fine as well. I don't think any man should be allowed to create any law based on a woman's body. Woman should have the choice of doing whatever they want. If a woman doesn't or young girl doesn't feel ready to take care of another little human being its totally okay. Every person had a different opinion and they're  both just fine.

Police Brutality pt. 56637894... By kloe rhoden

Alright, so I don't know how many blogs I have to do before someone does something, A police officer brutally beat another black teen and well you know what happened, she did something he thought meant Beat me till I'm almost dead, so he did so now the public knows black people are mad and he's still fine, he wrong it needs to end blah blah blah, I'm sick of repeating myself. Whatever happened to treat others the way you want to be treated? Sounds childish but maybe kids are doing it right because the adults sure as hell aren't. Our air is trash, the planet is dying and y'all are talking about some freaking straws, why not band fishing, stricken littering laws, stop exploiting the ocean, send people to dig out trash in the ocean and make it a public works project and give more jobs to the people that even in today's world feel there are no more jobs, like really dude people make money to post on Instagram. I say this to say end police brutality! and this can realate to when the black college kids would do sit ins and get beat.https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ellievhall/justice-for-lucca-viral-video-broward-police

Tornados : Zoe Williams

This article discusses the extent of the possible damage that tornados may have on areas from Missouri to Texas.  Nearly 4 million people are in danger.

I chose this article because I have a very close friend that lives in Oklahoma, where the brunt of the damage is sure to take place.  This article contained pictures and diagrams to help explains the breadth of the possible damage, so it is obvious that the author wishes to educate the public on how to be safe.  this can relate to Okies and the Dust Bowl because they were forced to leave due to environmental threat, just as current citizens of Oklahoma might have to do because of the tornados.

New Abortion laws -Angelia Perez

State after state laws are sweeping countries with a law making restricting abortions and Alabama near abortion ban. Celebrities all over are fighting against this like Alyssa Milano are protesting this with a sex strike for an example. Conservatives are saying that she went so far left that she ended up on the right with this protest. Protests are happening all over saying abortions should be legal for women and their rights shouldn't be getting taken away. The person that came up and passes this law in Alabama was actually a woman named Kay Ivey. People who are Pro-Choice are furious with this bill because they believe in the "My body, My Choice."

Looking at it from both perspectives this is coming to a loss for the people who are pro-choice but a win for the pro-lifers.  If I am being completely honest I am Pro-life because it is what u grew up in believing in a Christian household. I hate to see the nation being torn apart by this.

Lily Philips- Trump Broadcast Every Day?

Samuel Rogatinsky, a man in Florida who has a radio station, has decided to air bits and pieces of Trump’s political rally speech every hour until the day of the 2020 Presidential Elections. His intent was to bring attention to the President’s goal to aid the people of Florida who were hurt by Hurricane Michael. He is a democrat but voted for Trump in 2016 elections; the Panhandle of Florida is a primarily red area, so many of the resident were very excited about the news of these broadcasts. The rally was very popular and provided a source of motivation to the people.
This article was written by Patricia Mazzei on May 15. This article was published in The New York Times which is a world renowned news corporation. The audience is the people of Florida and the rest of the United States to inform them about a radio broadcast update about Trump. This was to serve as hope for restoration of their land that Trump promised after the destructive hurricane in October. This can be connected to the current U.S. President and his rallies because that is where the clips are from that Rogatinsky is airing on his radio show.

Rapists can now sue? by kloe rhoden

My article was about the fact that that in Arkansas Rapists are allowed to try sue women for having abortions because technically 50% is his, but the thing is, if you don't carry the baby and you aren't the one who comes out feeling insecure about your body. You aren't the one having to deliver the baby,  and the fact that this woman wasn't even trying to have sex in the first place shows you that if you wanted a baby that bad you should have found somebody who wanted you. I think this relates back to Roe vs Wade. Overall men do not have ANY say AT ALL in what a woman does with her body no matter who's DNA it is because her part is a lot more than having an orgasm. I have 4 more to push out so I'm just going to end here.

Transgender women beaten up in video found dead -Angelia Perez

A transgender woman was found dead in the streets of Dallas not long after a video was recovered where she was being beaten as a hate crime. Muhlaysia Booker, 23, was found face down where people reported hearing gunshots and she was pronounced dead at the scene.  Representatives in our government primarily Democrats are mourning her death and Beto said: " Black trans-women deserve better.".  Police are still looking for the people who did this and the case is still open.

Hate crimes towards the LGBTQ+ community have worsened over the years and you would think they have gotten better. Even if you don't agree with that lifestyle you don't have to go after somebody because they have a different view from yours.

Abortion is a right by Kloe Rhoden

To about half of you reading this may have completely different issues on what I'm about to say but thats okay, all I ask is that you keep an open mind. So abortion, many people believe this is something that is evil and wrong. "Why would you kill and innocent life?" And I call BULLSH**! I Don't understand how Staes like Alabama Georgia Ohio etc, feel they have a right to dictate what another person does to their body. They claim to be pro life but the second that life enters the world they are silent. A prime example is the foster care system, I wanna see those same "Pro-Life" advocates advocate for those lives. These kids are rarely adopted and when they live in foster homes don't receive the attention that a child needs. The process to foster a kid isn't the slightest exclusive almost anyone can, yet when a family wants to adopt its a whole other story. If a 16 year old girl cannot adopt a child and is deemed irresponsible then why is she being forced to go through with a whole 9 month period of pain, come out with a totally new body, and nw be responsible for another life for the next 18 years. I'm not saying its impossible because it has been done but why Force someone to, why does a woman get the right to say I'm not ready why do women have to be dying in order for them to get an abortion. Prohibiting abortions will not only prove ineffective but lead to greater health problems with women. Why not keep the safe solution? And why does a baby who knows nothing hold more valuable than a woman's life? Forcing women to go through with pregnancies they don't want, could even lead to more child abuse and a greater normalization of that abuse. I got a little off subject but this is a topic I will truly fight till the ends of the earth for. My article was about the fact that in these states if you have an illegal abortion (an aborrtion for a reason other than it killing you), will get you life in jail. You can't even travel to another state to do it because you still face jail time. Of course this relates bak to roe vs wade. https://www.vox.com/2019/5/17/18628265/alabama-abortion-law-missouri-georgia-roe-v-wade

Lily Philips- Measles Outbreak!!

This year’s outbreak of the measles is the largest since 1994 where 41 different cases were reported in one week. The cases of this disease have been in 24 different states in our country and have now reached 880 people. There is not a consistent rate of spreading, and it cannot be calculated. The transmission of this sickness is lower when there is warmer weather, especially going into these summer months. Since some are worried, there have been an increase of vaccines available to patients.
This article was published in The New York Times and written by Donald G. McNeil Jr. on May 20. The article informs readers about the numbers behind the spreading of the disease and patterns. The audience is the people of the country of the United States since this is where the disease is. This can be connected to the diseases that the Europeans gave to the Native Americans, killing the majority of them. This was one of the main causes of the decrease of Indians on this land.

Elle Grinnell- Missouri senate passes bill banning abortions at 8 weeks

recently, on Thursday the 16th Missouris mostly republican senate passed a bill which banned almost all abortions after the eight week period. they claim that the reasoning for this law is that everyone has a right to life and it will defend the rights of both those born and unborn. In this law within the state of Missouri abortions are only legal if it's a medical emergency that prevents death of if having the children would harm the carrier. one major negative thing about this law is that there are no exceptions for occurrences such as rape or incest victims.
in this case, we are really going back and history and not going forward at all because women aren't really having freedom or rights for themselves. There is no reason for a man to have control over a womens choices or how she deals with a situation especially one as life changing as this one. this law is challenging roe v. wade which was a decision of the Supreme Court that provided a "right to privacy". this right protected a pregnant persons decision of weather or not to carry out with an abortion.

Police Chief has been Fired after Incident in D.C - Angelia Perez

Fort Worth police chief Joel Fitzgerald was kicked out earlier this month after the state law-enforcement  Associations of Texas found out he joined without being a member of the local union which is required. The people gave him a chance to resign but Fitzgerald did not. Several days later he apparently got in a heated discussion with Sgt. Todd Harrison in Washington D.C. Soon Manny Rameriez who is the president of the Fort Worth Police officers had to step in between the two men on stage where officers were being honored at a banquet.

I honestly feel bad for the guy but at the same time, he didn't do what he was supposed to do. I read that people of the Fort Worth station were embarrassed and I would be too. We take responsibility for our actions led by emotion and he obviously didn't handle the situation very well.

Transgender woman who was attacked in April found dead in Dallas -AYSHA JACKSON

Muhlaysia Booker was found face down in the street after a report of a shooting. This is the same women who was brutally beaten by 7 men after a minor traffic accident just a month prior. What was a minor situation was turned into a brutal hate crime that was recorded. One of the men arrested and prosecuted for the assault of the woman has not yet been linked to her murder.

You think you live in ‘the land of the free’ but we really don’t. We’ve grown
Up with this ideal that in America you can be whoever you want and have all this freedom but freedom isn’t the ruler of this country it’s oppression. There is a standard that the US has always followed and we do try to branch away from that at times but things like this happen. Now I don’t know who these men were but if it’s not whites oppressing blacks or whites being racist to Latinos and Hispanics then it’s men oppressing women. There seems to be a lot of that happening lately.

There’s this huge debate of pro-life and pro choice in the debate of abortion laws and to me this goes hand and hand with that. This was someone who chose how she wanted to live her life but at the end of the day what she wanted didn’t matter. In this land of the free it seems like we are confined to only make one choice when it’s been programmed into us that the options were endless.

LILY MONDAY

There was a post on New York Times titled Pregnancy kills. Abortion saves lives. I agree with the statement that the article is making. It discusses the fact that pregnancy is a health risk to all women and many die because of it, and it poses more of a health threat to women than abortions. By banning abortion we jeoperdize the lives of women and take away the rights to their own bodies. There was a story about a woman denied the rights of abortion and she turned to other methods, unhealthy methods, such as coat hanger or otherwise and lost her life. This is something that occurs frequently for women in this position.

A lot of people have been bringing up the Roe V. Wade court case and how this problem was solved years ago. But somehow we seem to be continually fighting women oppression. The world has taken a step back since Roe V. Wade.

Woman shot and robbed in Buckner Terrace - Angelia Perez

Police are still trying to identify a man who may have shot and robbed a woman. This incident happened around 9:10 a.m around Skyline High School when a vehicle stopped and two men got out, police said. The two people took her property and then shot her and then fled the scene. Unfortunately, this is all police have for this incident.

I just don't get why people have the need to steal stuff people and then later kill them. Like what goes through their mind when they are about to take a life. We live in a broken society unfortunately and we all wish there is something we could do instead of feeling helpless sometimes. I  hope and pray that we all live to see the day where no one kills for sport.

Billionaire pays off student’s school debt- Sophie Knox

Source: https://roguerocket.com/2019/05/20/billionaire-pledges-to-pay-loan-debt-of-this-years-morehouse-college-graduates/

Summary: Robert F. Smith, the richest black man alive, just offered to pay off student debt for 2019 graduates of Morehouse College. It is expected to cost over $40 million dollars, and helping over 400 graduates. One of the graduates named Aaron Mitchom said that he had created a spread sheet to see how much debt he owed and how long it would take to pay it off. According to his calculations, he had over 200,000 in debt and take about 25 years to pay off. Smith has done many other amazing contributions like donating $50 million to Cornell University, $20 million to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and $2.5 million to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Analysis: I chose this story because in Algebra, we just had a project where we calculated/estimated what our hypothetical student debt would be, how much interest was, and the monthly payments needed to pay it off. Student debt has become a major issue in the U.S because it has risen to over 1.5 trillion according to the Federal Reserve system. The author was not biased in this and primary only stated facts, but typically this website leans a tad bit left. I can relate this to the philanthropy theory in the progressive era.

SAT’s New ‘Adversity Score’ Will Take Students’ Hardships Into Account -Martina D’Orso

Recently, the College Board decided to implement a new ‘Adversity score’ which basically calculates poverty rates, crime rates, how good their school is, and the whole socioeconomic ordeals surrounding their neighborhood. This is aimed to give college admissions officers an extra insight into the college application, but it is also aimed at getting race out of the equation for college. This way, the colleges could make a diverse campus based on socioeconomic status and merit rather than just race. This new addition was met with a lot of controversy from many different people for multiple reasons, such as you can’t define someone’s troubles with just a socioeconomic ‘score.’
This article was written on May 16, 2019 by Anemona Hartocollis. Previously, I had known about this score but I didn’t fully realize what it was used for. I think the intentions college board has are good, but I feel like they are executing their whole idea incorrectly. Although I agree that people who live in lower socioeconomic areas do go through more to get better grades, etc. I feel like you can’t measure each individual person through a score because not everyone lives the same life. Recently, for example, there was a group of Asian Americans who sued Harvard saying that they wanted race blind admissions, and this created a large controversy. Many people of color believed that by making admissions ‘race blind’ then colleges are ridding those people of what makes them truly an individual.  I believe everyone has their own reasons to hate or love the new adversity score, but it seems childish and innocent of college board to believe that everyone in each socioeconomic level has gone through the same amount of trouble.

Anna Speer - Alabama passes abortion law

Last week, Alabama enacted the most restrictive abortion laws in the United States.  A woman could not end her pregnancy once the fetus has heartbeat. The governor stated she signed the law that reflects the high value on the 'sanctity of life'. The law would only permit abortions if the mother's life was at risk or the fetus was not viable.  Unfortunately, Alabama is not the only state that has recently limited the woman's right to end a pregnancy.  Missouri, Ohio and Georgia have also "heartbeat" legislation under consideration.  These recent bills are particularly unsettling for women's rights.  Will this lead to the Supreme Court?  Will this lead to Roe v. Wade being overturned?  As a Christian woman, I still believe that the State does not have the right to intervene. What might be right for some might not be for others, but that is not for government to decide.

Elton Tankersley - Prosecutors examining tens of thousands of Trump inauguration documents

https://www-m.cnn.com/2019/05/20/politics/trump-inaugural-prosecutors-new-york/index.html?r=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F

The article talks about the ongoing search by many groups into Trump’s finances. It talks about the massive amounts of documents they are sorting through and some of the people they have interviewed.

The article was written during the Era of Trump and it reflects the strong opposition that he is and will be facing. It was written for people looking for info on the Trump investigations to give them that info. It was written by Kara Scannell and I don’t see any bias in her writing. This is important because if it is found that he committed campaign finance fraud then he would certainly be impeached.

Lori Lightfoot is Chicago’s 56th mayor and was sworn in on Monday, May 20. Her inauguration speech will go down in history, and she focused on the city’s need for reform. She won all 50 wards and plans to first take care of zoning and power by aldermen. She also addressed her interest in bettering gun control and improving the quality of public schools. After electing Ms. Lightfoot, the city of Chicago became the biggest to elect an African American woman as mayor. She is also the first mayor from Chicago to be openly gay. Lori Lightfoot could be the woman who will initiate change not only in her city but in the country as well.
This article was written by Julie Bosman and Mitch Smith and was published in The New York Times on May 20. The audience of the article are not only the people of Chicago but also the country. She will definitely go down in history as a positive step towards change and reform. This informs us of who she is and what she has to offer in her term as mayor. She can be connected to Michelle Obama who is a revolutionary, strong African American woman who has a huge influence on the lives of many Americans today.
