Ryan Mecca | 'Enough Is Enough': Science, Too, Has a Problem With Harassment

Women have limited roles in the science field, with only about 30 percent in senior faculty positions in colleges in the U.S. Many women feel that sexual harassment and lack of credit in the field would be greatly diminished through the addition of more female scientists into positions. Women in the industry such as Dr. Córdova feel strongly about this situation and they believe that "enough is enough" and they wish to end gender harassment for good.
This article is written on November 19, soon after the implementation of the policy that requires academic institutions to report any grantees that are found guilty of gender harassment to the National Science Foundation. The article, through explaining the issues of sexual/gender harassment in the science field, acts as a calling to other fields to begin to recognize possible incidences of similar issues within their institutions; this not only shows the strength of women in the industry but also shows that people should stand up and create policies in order to help resolve issues that arise. The author, Amy Harmon, who I'm assuming is also a woman, seems to agree with the policy enacted by Dr. Córdova, not writing any positions of argument towards it. This source provides Americans, particularly women, with a sense of hope for our country's gender equality and shows that we are improving little by little.
This policy's enactment relates to the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. The Seneca Falls Convention provided a platform for the women to speak out about women's rights, particularly their equality with men; this policy also provides this platform, as women in the science field are standing up for their work and their wish for change.

Vincent Reid- Missionary Killed Trying to Contact Tribe

Search for Missionary's Body Halted Due to Risk of Disease
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-india-usa-murder/citing-disease-risk-to-tribe-group-urges-halt-to-hunt-for-dead-american-idUSKCN1NV1JN

On November 15, an American Christian missionary named John Allen Chau made a fatal illegal trip to the North Sentinel island in an attempt to convert them.  He was subsequently killed by the tribe and the seven people who helped him get to the island have been arrested.  The North Sentinelese are believed to be the only pre-neolithic tribe left on the planet.  The Indian government is seeking out to retrieve the body of Chau, however the indigenous rights group Survival International has been heavily advising against this intrusion to the island, as with every subsequent visit to the island by outsiders, the risk of the tribe getting wiped out grows even larger.

Reuters has provided current and relevant information regarding this story and many others, and is a rather reliable source of information.  I believe this event to be a tragic one, and one with a very complex decision to be made.  Should Chau's body be retrieved for his mourning family, or should the safety of the Sentinelese be prioritized and they remain as they are, unscathed by the diseases of the world at large.  I also believe the death of Chau to be a sorrowful revelation, however his death could have been prevented with a greater enforcement of the sovereignty of the Sentinelese.

I believe this event and its implications bare some resemblance to the isolation of the American territory of American Samoa during the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918.  The island was one of if not the sole survivor of the plague, avoiding it by maintaining a strict regulation of isolation of its people.  That is much like how, while the rest of the world endures the various diseases of measles, flu, or any disease, the North Sentinelese stay safe by keeping their isolation and by the rest of the world respecting that isolation and their rights.

Poisoned Wildlife and Tainted Meat: Why Hunters Are Moving Away From Lead Bullets - Emma Hancock

Poisoned Wildlife and Tainted Meat: Why Hunters Are Moving Away From Lead Bullets
This article explains how hunters around the world are slowly transitioning from the traditional lead bullet to copper bullets due to evidence growing that it poisons the game meat many people consume. It discusses testimonies of hunters that have recently transitioned and people apart of wildlife hunting organizations. While many hunters are skeptical of this ‘myth’, others have gone ahead and started using purely copper bullets that work just as well to be safe. The restrictions of lead bullets has grown quite a bit in the USA, only 30 states fully regulate the use for hunting. Wildlife services are even offering free non-lead ammunitions to Native American tribes and other hunters. Hunters are hesitant to use these bullets for several reasons such as wasting current stock of ammunition, a health threat to animals, a step towards limiting gun rights, and simply the quality of it. Many fear that enforcing non-lead bullets will discourage people from hunting altogether, but some feel this change is necessary.

This article is interesting to me because it makes me wonder why people are so reluctant to change. Lead has previously been removed from many everyday materials such as gasoline and paint, why should ammunition be excluded? This transition is similar to when lead was completely removed from gasoline in 1995, the Clear Air act being enforced in 1990. A similar ban may take place in the near future as we see California already aiming to place a ban in present-times.

Cathy Huynh - iPhone app antitrust case lands at Supreme Court

Summary: Apple is at the Supreme Court to defend the way it sells apps for iPhones against claims by consumers that they have unjustly monopolized the market. On Monday, the justices are hearing arguments in Apple's effort to end an antitrust lawsuit that could force them to cut the 30% commission it charges software developers whose apps are sold exclusively through it's App Store. A judge could triple the compensation to consumers under antitrust law if Apple loses the lawsuit. Apple said it doesn't own the apps or sell them, it's the responsibility of software developers. But the lawsuit says that Apple exerts a lot of control over the process, for example, a requirement that prices end in .99. The issue for the Supreme Court is whether Apple can even be sued about the apps, as prior antitrust cases have proved otherwise. In other cases, the justices have said there must be a direct relationship between the seller and a party complaining about unfair pricing. A trial court initially dismissed the lawsuit, but the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals revived it.

Analysis: This article was produced at 9:02 AM Today, basically 2 hours prior to the current time I'm writing this article, so it's safe to say this is reliable information. Though, there's no author mentioned which is strange. I didn't know about this at all, well I recently have not been paying attention to news but still. Something similar that happened in the past was Aaron Burr's conspiracy regarding capitalization on a possible war with Spain, even though he lost the case he was set free to do whatever he wanted because he was a previous vice president. Apple has a lot of power like Burr, even if it lost too it would still prosper. This article was written for consumers who share the same grievances. This article was written, because it is an important case against Apple. This article is important, because almost everyone buys from Apple so it's very important to us.

Shooting on Florida Bus- Angelia Perez

24 year old Michael Porter and 38 year old Bendy Alcine were in a heated argument on florida bus and Porter was seen on a surveillance camera shooting the gun. Passengers ran for cover but on person ended up in the hospital. When the video was released and you can see the two men getting into a physical fight before the gunshot went off. After Porter shot the gun he quickly gathered his things and fled the scene. Alcine was brought to Broward Health Medical Center and is in stable condition.

Analysis:

This relates back to an article published in 2013 about how Jordyn Howe killed Lourdes Guzman-DeJesus on a private school bus. The worst part is that she was shot in front of her 7 year old sister. Howe has been released from jail. It is heart breaking that these situations are becoming the norm in today's culture. In 2018 there have been 307 reported shootings.

"Twitter Bans Conservative Writer, Combat Vet Jesse Kelly. They Likely Violated Their Own Policy In Doing So." Youssef Bakr

Jesse Kelly, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served from 2000 to 2004, had his Twitter account suspended on November 25. Twitter did not give him the reason he was suspended, therefore violating its own rules. Twitter says it will inform users of "which content was in violation."

Aside from that, the more important issue at hand is that of censoring speech. Twitter has continually banned conservative speakers for expressing right-wing views. They began with Alex Jones, who no one really cares about, but nonetheless, is a right winger. Kelly warned that Jones was the first in a slippery slope ending with the ban of much of conservative expression on the "platform."

Twitter's censorship is remarkably similar to that of the Sedition Act, which barred citizens from criticizing the federal government.

US Authorities Spray Tear Gas at Migrants -Cleo Chaney

Original Article: https://www.npr.org/2018/11/25/670687806/u-s-agents-spray-tear-gas-at-migrants-briefly-close-tijuana-border-entry

On Sunday, US agents fired tear gas at migrants at the San Ysidro port of entry between Tijuana and San Diego. Over 5,000 migrants have been camping in Tijuana hoping to apply for asylum in the US. Evidently, people would cluster around the border ever so often, and US border agents would disperse them with tear gas. Although those who were sprayed were mainly adults, there were lots of children in the surrounding areas.

Trump is known for his anti-immigrant sentiments, and I would definitely consider him a Nativist. He is very xenophobic in things his says and his policies--from his harsh stance on illegal immigration, the Muslim ban from 2017, and all of the fear-mongering about "the Caravan." Reflecting on these beliefs, I think it's fair to say that he could have been a member of the Know-Nothing party during the Antebellum Era. The Know-Nothing party centered around Nativist principles in a reaction to a surge of immigrants (esp. Irish).

Also- tear gas was used a lot in World War II, and many international treaties banned its use in warfare. Why can the US (and other countries) use it for riot control?
