Sadie Schiermeyer- A Woman's New Role in Football

Thirty years ago, Gayle Sierens was not only the first woman to ever call an NFL game, but to call the game on live television. Her short-lived career, however, started a spark in girls all across the country. Beth Mowins was one of these girls. Her dad gave her a picture of Gayle when she was young and she grew up to be a sportscaster. Sadly, starting a family got in her way of pursuing her career in football any further. As of tonight, however, Mowins is back in the game. She is casting for the Denver Broncos and San Diego Chargers. Although the public eye may have their own opinions, Beth is back and more excited than ever to casting for the NFL.

Ahiza Garcia had the right motives when she decided to cover this event. More times than not, girls in today's social media are being reported over something that is stereotyped as delicate and/or feminine.  I know nothing about football except that it is a man's sport. As a girl, it is encouraging to see women go into fields that are not commonly accessible to our gender. Perhaps that is exactly why this article was written- to encourage other women and girls to take charge and achieve whatever they want to regardless of the gender stigma surrounding it. If writers and other people with social influence continue to write articles like these, the movement towards gender equality, in America and around the globe, may reach its goal sooner. We just need more women to be brave like Gayle Sierens and Beth Mowins and make the first move.

  1. At my old middle school, people have told me about some girls choosing to actually play on the football team. I am excited to see this kind of activism and this attitude towards gender roles in our generation and generations to come.

  3. I agree that it's important to see other women pursuing careers that are commonly thought of as a "man's" job. Especially for young girls, growing up in todays unequal society can be difficult, and it's definitely important for girls to have inspiration to pursue any career they wish.

  4. Such a great start and a great role model for future girls who want to pursue careers that they've been told aren't for them. Hope to see more of this very soon!
