Earthquake in Mexico- Soleil Singh

Right as Hurricane Harvey ended, and as Hurricane Irma shattered areas in the south east, everyone starts to think "What's happening to the world?"

THEN- Mexico had an earthquake. An abundance of homes and buildings were severely damaged, and so were some people, who had been caught in this extensive and tragic rubble. This earthquake resulted in being one of the most powerful earthquakes. "Half of the 19th-century city hall, with its 30 arches, collapsed. The main hospital here was so devastated that staff members evacuated patients to an empty lot and worked by the light of their cellphones."

By the time the earthquake’s tremors finally faded, at least 36 people were dead, and as clean up progressed, overall the earthquake left over 90 people dead, and many more injured. This was considered the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in a century, and the earthquake, which had a magnitude of 8.2 was felt by millions of people in Mexico and in Guatemala, where at least one person died as well. This earthquake striked shortly before midnight, and although the megalopolis of Mexico had only two of its nearly nine million people reporting injuries, neither serious; the rest of Mexico was immensely destroyed and deadly. As over 400 homes were destroyed, residents in Juchitán spent the morning using tools and their bare hands to dig through the wreckage of collapsed buildings and pull the injured, and the dead, from the rubble.
Analysis: This is a very solemn event and their efforts mostly turned from rescues to a cleanup operation. Though many Mexicans have grown accustomed to earthquakes, taking them as an immutable fact of life, Thursday’s left an impression on residents of the capital for both its force and length, and this earthquake is going to be an extensive and expensive recovery.

  1. How do you think the cost of recovering from the earthquake relates to the cost of recovering from the two hurricanes? Will it cost the Mexican government more than the United States government?

  2. Of course the government will have to help, but I think the people need to help as well. Theres only so much the government can do. One of the most important things these people need is to be shown that we all support them and will be helping them in any way we can.

    1. These hurricanes are insane! National Geographic has said that there will be more of these super hurricanes are caused by global warming and the rising temperature of the ocean surface.

  3. How do you think the government will respond to this event? Also how will it effect the economy of Mexico due to the cost of rebuilding?
