April smashes heat records
By Adrianna Martinez

This year the Earth has experienced the warmest April on record, leading 2016  to be the hottest year yet and by the biggest margin ever. NASA has released new data putting this April's land and sea temperatures at 1.11 degrees Celsius warmer than average April temperatures between 1951 to 1980. April was the seventh month in a row to rise by at least 1 degree Celsius above the 1951-8 averages.Temperatures haven risen this past year because of a strong El Nino, a weather event that causes the ocean waters to warm up in the tropical Pacific Ocean. This weather event brings extreme weather, including drought and heavy rains, to all parts of the world. If the planet goes above the two degrees of warming threshold nothing good will happen according to many reports from the National Research Council, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the World Bank. Wildfires in the United States could increase in size, hurricanes would be slightly more intense, species would be more at risk for extinction, Arctic ice would continue to melt, crop yields would decrease and the amount of freshwater would decline.
