Summary: Nola, a 41- year old
northern white rhinoceros living in San Diego Zoo, recently passed away. She
died at 41- years old due to a bacterial infection exacerbated by old age. Now,
the only hope of survival for her species lies with three rhinos currently
living in a preserve in Kenya; the rest of the population has been poached to
near extinction. Scientists, aware of this dire situation, are trying to
develop a way to artificially breed the species.
Synopsis: Hopefully, a solution is
found. It would be sad if another species died on humanity’s watch. However,
recovery could be possible. The American buffalo is one example, hunted nearly
to extinction for sport. At one time there were thousands of buffalo, then
hundreds, and now there are thousands again. The same might be possible for the
rhinos if a solution can be found.

Wow this is so sad! It's crazy how the survival of this species is dependent upon only 3 other rhinos! I really hope they can save this species and find a solution! -Nicole Chatham 6th period
ReplyDeleteThis is crazy! It's weird to think that an entire species could just cease to exist... I really hope they'll be able to save the species!
